Genesis
The Department of Livestock Business Management was established in 22.11.10 and is functioning at the ground floor of M.S. Srinivasalu block, Madras Veterinary College campus, Vepery, Chennai – 7.
Objectives
- To identify potential profit making avenues in Veterinary and Animal Sciences
- To identify technologies to bring down cost of production and maximize profit in such avenues and coordinate with other departments in refining such technologies
- To establish linkage with the livestock and poultry industry and develop projects on public-private partnership mode
- To imbibe and develop the qualities of entrepreneurship among the students of veterinary and animal sciences
- To provide consultancy services to aspiring entrepreneurs and veterinary and animal sciences graduates on different aspects of livestock business including export of livestock products
- To start a course on Livestock Business Management
Achievements
- The department has been conducting "Finishing school programme" for the final year B.V.Sc., students for the past two years in co-ordination with, EDI Chennai to improve the employability level of students.
- The department is organising training programme on "Soft Skill and Personality Development" for the first year B.V.Sc., students
- The department has conducted campus interview for the freshers in 2012 and 16 candidates were placed in various industries.
- The department is regularly conducting industrial guest lectures and motivational lectures by civil services officers for the benefit of the students.

Education
- Co-ordination of Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management in Animal Sciences and Fisheries Sciences
- Handling management related courses for undergraduate and post graduate courses
- Arranging various Academic Guest Lectures to Undergraduate and Post graduate students of Madras Veterinary College by eminent and experienced personalities from the relevant field/ industries
- Arranging Field visits for students to ascertain field exposure
- Improvement of soft skill and personality development of students through various soft skill development programmes through reputed institutes / video shows and other means
Research
The faculties of the department are currently being Co-principal Investigators in two externally funded projects
Extension
- Farm consultancy services are being rendered to livestock farmers and entrepreneurs.
- Department is actively involved in visiting various livestock / Poultry farms, conduct of exhibition and transfer of technology using appropriate extension tools.
Current Focus
The department is keen in moulding the students skill level so as to improve their employability level in industries by organising various motivational guest lectures and training programmes. The department is formulating MBA programme in Food and Livestock Business Management with the aim of developing graduates to start their own venture and cater to the needs of industries.
