TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY ACTIVITIES

Advisory / Consultancy

Queries were received from the farmers and suitable advises were sent to them by post, in person, by farm visits, by phone calls and through e-mail regarding problems on management, diseases control, cost minimization, profit maximization, project preparation etc., booklets on various animal husbandry practices were printed and distributed to the farmers.

Training

The training programmes conducted by the centres are tailored according to the needs and wants of the farmers. These programmes are so designed that it is suited to the location, culture and knowledge level of the trainees. Each programme is organized with clearly stated objectives. The content of the training programmes may broadly be categories as follows:

  • Animal Production
  • Animal Health
  • Marketing
  • Products technology
  • Farm business management
  • Integrated farming systems
  • Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering and Home Science

The training programmes are conducted both on the campus and off the campus. It is often felt difficult by the farmers, farm women and the rural youth to attend the training at the centres owing to their pre-occupation with farming and household activities. To overcome this difficulty and to satisfy the needs of these category of farmers, the centres are also organizing off campus training programmes in the villages and also at farmers field. The centres are also organizing specialized self employment training programmes in animal husbandry, fishery and related fields for youths and school droupouts.

Village Level Programme

Various programme are being implemented by this directorate at the village level like,

  • Institute village linkage,
  • On farm tests,
  • Front line demonstrations,
  • Skill oriented training programme and adoption of villages
  • Exhibition and
  • Mass contact programme
  • Under village adoption, services like
  • Village level meetings
  • Mass Contact Programme / infertility camps
  • Immunization of Desi chicken, covering the entire village
  • Village level training programme for capacity building
  • Fodder cultivation campaigns
  • Deworming of animals, with line departments / Department of Animal Husbandry support Immunization of animals, with line departments / Department of Animal Husbandry support
  • Monitoring of the progress/impact of village adoption

- are being practised at the adopted villages for the benefit of farming community.

Exhibitions

Exhibitions are effective visual medial through which the results of research and development are disseminated effectively. The Directorate of Extension Education is actively conducting and participating in Government Fairs, Expos and other Seminars and Workshops.

Print Media

Useful information and new research findings of the University are printed in the form of

  • leaflets,
  • folders,
  • pamphlets and
  • booklets

and distributed to farmers which ensures wider reach and also facilitate easy storage of information by farmers for future reference.

The important forms of print media utilized by Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University for distance education of farmers are,

  • Books on Livestock and Fisheries Sciences

Timely information, disease forecasts, newer research findings are published in leading dailies and magazines of the state in the form of news articles, Science stories etc, Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University is also bringing out

  • a bimonthly journal "Kalnadai Kathir" in Tamil,
  • a quarterly journal "Meenvala Kathir" in Tamil,
  • a bimonthly research journal "Tamil Nadu Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences" and monthly "Newsletter" in English and "Cheithi Madal" in Tamil.

Electronic Media

  • Audio and Video lessons are prepared by utilizing the well equipped video laboratory and distributed to the training centres viz., FTCs, KVKs, VUTRCs, RRC, information centres, NGOs and line departments to serve as teaching tool for the farmers and end users.
  • Regularly telecasting programme on livestock and fish farming (in the form of message talks, interview, success stories, discussions, etc.) through Doordarshan Kendra and also through private channels.
  • Regular broadcasting of educational programme on livestock and fish farming through All India Radio, Gyanvani (IGNOU) etc.
  • The Directorate of Extension Education has Prepared 34 Video Lessons and 3 Audio Lessons on Animal Husbandry and Fisheries.
  • Farm Radio School Programmes on various aspects of Scientific Livestock farming and Fish farming were also conducted. So far 34 Farm Radio School programme has been broadcast and delivered to the end users of Tamil Nadu State.

Kisan Call Centre

The Department of Agriculture & Cooperation has launched Kisan Call Centres with a view to leverage the extensive telecom infrastructure to deliver extension services to farmers on toll free telephone number (1551). Kisan Call Center consists of three levels. The Director of Extension Education has been nominated as Nodal Officer (Level II). Through this scheme, a telephone line was installed at this Directorate by Coconut Development Board, Kochi and it started functioning from 21.1.2004.

Single Window Delivery System

Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) is established by Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University under the financial assistance of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for developing coordination and intensive interaction between the researchers and technology users. This centre aims at developing linkage between the Research Institution and farmers.

Farmers visiting this centre are being provided with latest technologies on livestock and fisheries farming and it is linking various units of Research Institutions with intermediary users and end users(Farmers) in decision making and problem solving. The Information and Services of ATIC include

  • Books published by different scientists of this University in livestock and fishery farming and product technology are available for sales.
  • Video lessons on livestock and fishery farming, milk products, fishery products preparation, disease diagnostic kits are also made available for screening and for sales.
  • Pamphlets, leaflets on livestock, fishery production and management, disease control, products technology are available for free distribution to the visiting farmers.
  • Various agricultural, livestock journals, magazines and news letters of Universities are being made available at ATIC to provide library services to the visiting farmers.
  • Regular advisory services on livestock and fisheries farming and products preparation are being offered.
  • Hands on training programmes on preparation of milk, meat and fishery products are being offered regularly to the needy personnel.
  • Viable Bank projects on livestock and fishery farming are drawn for starting new farms.
  • Helping in disease diagnostic services for livestock and poultry.
  • Soil testing for agricultural operations and water testing for fish farms establishment are being provided.
