The Department of Clinics established in the year 1977 and renowned for the excellence of its faculty and clinical services was started with the main goal of providing quality veterinary medical services. In more than 34 years since its inception The Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital has become one of the country's premier veterinary hospital handling more than 80,000 cases annually offering cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic services relative to large and small animal clinical services.
The vision now not only involves providing quality veterinary medical services but also involves advancing the science of veterinary medicine, surgery and reproduction through basic and applied research. The breadth of faculty expertise encompasses the disciplines of primary care, surgery, internal medicine, radiology, anesthesiology, reproduction, cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology and dermatology.

The hospital has various units both in small animal and large animal section. The strength of the hospital is the abundant clinical material and technical expertise. The hospital has pioneered and standardized many clinical procedures and remains unconquered in the entire South East Asia. The hospital has basically Medicine, Surgery and Gynaecology and Obstetrics units in both large and small animal section.
In addition there are small and large animal operation theatres. The hospital is equipped with Mobile Veterinary Clinic and ambulance to cater the needs of animal owners of various parts of the city. A hydrotherapy and medicated bath unit for the treatment and prevention of various skin disorders of dogs and cats viz., kerato-seborrhoeic disorders, parasitic, bacterial, fungal and allergic skin diseases is functioning since 2011.
The Pharmacy unit, an integral part of the Department of Clinics, Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital functions with an average annual budget of Rs.15, 00,000 wherein drugs and fluids are procured and dispensed free of cost for the treatment of animals brought to the hospital.
The Teaching Veterinary Hospital serves on an average to about 200 animals and their clients every day. Animal Health Camps, free Rabies Vaccine campaigns, Security Dog Squad Annual Health programmes are routinely operated for the benefit of communities.
On an average 50 Training programmes are conducted utilizing the resources of the Teaching Veterinary Hospital for Knowledge and Technology Transfer to Field Veterinarians, Academicians and Scientists. The Faculty of the Clinical Departments serve as resource persons for several educational, research and training programmes throughout the country.
The hospital offers training for various national and international students, short and refresher courses, hands on training for practicing and field veterinarians on cost basis. Conducts free anti rabies vaccine campaign
The state of art referral clinic of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Ethics and Jurisprudence has Ultrasound, Phonocardiography, Holter ECG System, Stress ECG System, and Vital Signs Monitoring System, Cardiac Defibrillator, Ventilator, Infusion Pumps, Blood Gas Analyser, Haemodialysis, Endoscopy and EEG. The referral clinic also provides intensive and critical care services to the ailing animals brought to the veterinary hospital. The Department of Clinics is equipped with a state of the art Colour Flow Doppler Echocardiography and 3 Dimensional Ultrasound. On an average 45 cases per month of cardiac ailments which include mitral valvular insufficiency, dilated cardiomyopathy, pericardial diseases etc. are being diagnosed using this state of art facility. In addition around 150 practicing veterinarians per year are being trained on ultrasound and echocardiography. The large and small animal referral unit of the Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics provides reproductive services such as ultrasonographic diagnosis of pregnancy and various reproductive disorders; prediction of ovulation and optimum breeding time based on vaginal exfoliative cytology and vaginoscopy; and artificial insemination.

The hospital has a strong clinical pathology unit which strives to meet the demands of advancing veterinary clinical practice wherein the clinician is often made to rely completely on laboratory profiles to confirm his diagnosis. The lab uses a state of art autoanalyzer for analysis of samples the results are communicated immediately as per the request and need. The CCL unit also caters to the need of the PG research scholars of various departments to analyse the clinical samples of their research unit. On an average, the laboratory receives around 15,000 samples from various units of MVC teaching hospital, the University farms, and Research centres.
Owing to the impact that the hospital has created in the international arena, the hospital imparts externship training programmes to the veterinary students of many foreign universities viz.Michigan State University, Virginia tech university and Washington University, USA; University of Munich, Germany; Murdoch University, Australia; St.Isthevan University, Budapest; Sultan Quaboos University, Oman; University Putra, Malaysia and Chittagong University, Bangladesh. Clinical training in various specialities of the hospital have also been provided to the practitioners from Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and other Asian countries.
