Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Orathanadu was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2012 with the objective of strengthening veterinary education, research and extension services and supporting the sustainable development of the livestock sector in the Cauvery Delta Region. The institute was established to cater to the educational, research and extension needs of the livestock sector in the Cauvery Delta Region of Tamil Nadu and functions as a constituent college of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai.
The college is located at Orathanadu in Thanjavur District, approximately 25 km from Thanjavur on the Thanjavur–Pattukottai Road, making it easily accessible to students, researchers, livestock farmers and other stakeholders. Spread across an area of 206.96 acres, the campus provides a conducive environment for teaching, research, clinical training and extension activities.
The Government of Tamil Nadu issued orders for the establishment of the Veterinary College and Research Institute at Orathanadu through G.O. Ms. No. 134, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (AH-6) Department, dated 09.11.2011. Subsequently, comprehensive government orders sanctioning manpower, civil works and infrastructure facilities were issued through G.O. (Ms.) No. 223 dated 20.12.2012, enabling the institution to function in accordance with the norms prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI).
The Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) degree programme commenced in 2012 with an initial intake of 40 students and the establishment of seven core departments, namely Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production and Management, Instructional Livestock Farm Complex and Veterinary Clinical Complex.
Since its inception, the institute has witnessed substantial academic and infrastructural growth. At present, seventeen academic and clinical departments are functioning, providing comprehensive education, research and extension support across various disciplines of veterinary and animal sciences. With the approval of the Veterinary Council of India, the annual intake for the B.V.Sc. & A.H. programme was enhanced to 100 students from the academic year 2021–2022 onwards.
The institute has established advanced teaching, research and clinical infrastructure, including specialized laboratories, livestock farms, modern diagnostic facilities, research centres and outreach platforms, contributing significantly to veterinary education and livestock development in Tamil Nadu. The introduction of postgraduate programmes, specialized diploma programmes, advanced research centres and modern clinical facilities has further strengthened the academic, research and extension capabilities of the institution.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Programme of VCRI, Orathanadu is designed to promote academic excellence, research exposure and professional skill development among students and young researchers. The programme provides opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students from Life Science and Allied Biological Science disciplines of various colleges and universities to undertake internships, dissertation work, project work and research training at the institute.
The HRD Programme emphasizes hands-on learning and practical exposure through advanced laboratory facilities, research farms and specialized departments. Participants receive training in modern scientific techniques and research methodologies in areas such as microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and animal sciences under the guidance of experienced faculty members.
