Veterinary College and Research Institute, Theni was established as the sixth constituent Veterinary College of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in the year 2020 vide GO (MS) No.85 dt.21.07.2020 AHDFD, Government of Tamil Nadu, with a view to give impetus to growth of livestock sector in Theni and the surrounding districts. The foundation stone for the construction of college campus at Veerapandi was laid on 11.12.2020 on a sprawling area of 253.64 acres.
A total of 39 students were admitted in the first batch (2020 -2021) on March 21 of 2021. As the construction of permanent buildings for the college was under progress, the college was functioning at Kalvi Trust, Devathanappatti. The second (2021 -2022) and third batch (2022-2023) were admitted with an intake strength of 40 students and they continued their study at temporary campus. On completion of building construction, the college moved to permanent campus on 09.03.2023. The infrastructure facilities available in the college include eight academic blocks, modern lecture halls with audiovisual aids, hospital equipped with a state-of-the-art facility, library with internet facilities, cafeteria, and student’s co-operative store. The student intake was increased to 80 from 2023 -2024 batch onwards, and the first batch students are undergoing internship programme from 08.10.2025.
As a testament to the steady growth of the college, foundation stone was laid for the construction of animal houses for maintaining various species of livestock and poultry on 10.02.2023 and livestock farm complex came into existence from August’2024, where horse, dairy cattle, sheep and goats, swine, layer chicken and various species of birds are being maintained. A total of 10 acres of land has been prepared for cultivation of different varieties of fodder crops.
As for hostel facilities, a separate hostel facility for boys and girls and currently food is provided through contract mess, and student mess will be started from the month of july’2026. It is an honour to the college is having NCC unit with 160 cadets, which has been functioning since February’2026. The NSS unit of the college is functioning since inception, and volunteers are involved in various social service. Besides, Wild life club was inaugurated on 06.05.2022 to inculcate importance of conservation of wild animals for maintaining ecosystem and Tamil Mandram (Porunai) was also inaugurated on 02.06.2022 to foster Tamil among the students’ community.
The Veterinary Council of India has awarded its final approval to VCRI Theni and has been listed in the first schedule of the Indian Veterinary council Act 1984 on 20.11.2025.
Faculty members are in place for all five-year departments including Veterinary Clinical Complex and Livestock Farm Complex. The institute has a well-qualified and dedicated teaching faculty and most of them are PhDs. Many faculty members have acquired their higher education degrees at national and international levels. The non-teaching staff such as Administrative Officer, Accounts Officer, Superintendent, Junior Assistant, Technician and Electrician cum plumber are also in place for the routine administrative activities. Besides, currently, the college has casual labours including drivers for the day-to-day operational activities. Security guards are also in place at college, hostel and farm campus.
