Genesis

The Department of Clinics was established in the year 1977 with the main goal of providing quality veterinary medical services. In more than 45 years since its inception The Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital has become one of the country's premier veterinary hospitals handling more than one lakh cases annually offering cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic services relative to large and small animal clinical services.

The vision includes providing quality veterinary medical services and advancing the science of veterinary medicine, surgery and reproduction through basic and applied research. The breadth of faculty expertise encompasses the disciplines of primary care, surgery, internal medicine, imaging, radiology, anesthesiology, reproduction, cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and dermatology.

Hospital Facilities and Services

  • The hospital has various units in large and small animal sections. The strength of the hospital is the abundant clinical material and technical expertise. The hospital has pioneered and standardized many clinical procedures
  • The hospital has Medicine, Surgery and Gynaecology & Obstetrics units in both large and small animal sections
  • The hospital is equipped with an ambulance to shift large animals from various parts of the city
  • The Pharmacy unit of the Department of Clinics, Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital functions with an average annual budget of Rs.25,00,000 wherein drugs and fluids are procured and dispensed free of cost for the treatment of animals brought to the hospital
  • Animal Health Camps, Free Rabies Vaccine campaigns, regular Health check up and advisory programs for animals belonging to Police, Army, and other government organization are routinely done
  • Several Training programsare conducted every year utilizing the resources of the Teaching Veterinary Hospital including Advanced Faculty Training program, Skill development program, training/ seminar on specialized diagnostic, surgical or therapeutic procedures for the benefit of the Practising Veterinarians, Academicians and Scientists
  • The Faculty of the Clinical Departments serve as resource persons for several educational, research and training programs throughout the country
  • The Department also offers training for various national and international students as clinical internship and externship programme
  • Inpatient ward, Veterinary Medical Record Section, Dietary advice to the pets, exclusive Exotic/ birds section and provision of laboratory diagnostic services provide added strength for referral units and functioning of the hospital
  • The hospital has established networking facilities for data storage, and retrieval for effective communication

Centralized Clinical Laboratory

  • The hospital has a well established clinical pathology unit to meet the demands of advancing veterinary clinical practice
  • The lab uses autoanalyzer for haematology, serum biochemistry, and urinalysis. Bacteriology, fungal, virology and cytology sections provides specific information to the wards in time helping in quick diagnosis
  • This unit also caters to the need of the PG research scholars to analyse the clinical samples. On an average, the laboratory receives more than 30,000 samples from various units of MVC teaching hospital, the University farms, and Research centres
  • Owing to the impact that the hospital has created in the International arena, the hospital imparts extern-ship training programs to the veterinary students of many foreign universities viz. Michigan State University, Virginia Tech University and Washington University, USA; University of Munich, Germany; Murdoch University, Australia; St.Isthevan University, Budapest; Sultan Quaboos University, Oman; University Putra, Malaysia and Chittagong University, Bangladesh
