Genesis

The Library of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli was established in 2012 for the exclusive use for students and faculties of the college. It is having a floor space of 2084 sq.ft equipped with eight computers and one server system with Un Interrupted Power Supply and broad band internet facility.


Objectives

  • To extend effective and efficient library and information services to the students, faculty and scientists of the University.
  • To support the curriculum of the college and enrich all parts of the educational program.

Working hours

Weekdays 9.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Saturdays 10.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m

Services

  • Book lending (The University Officers, Professors and Associate Professors can borrow 12 books; Assistant Professors and PG students can borrow six books at a time for a period of 30 days from the library. The UG students are eligible to borrow three books at a time for a period of 10 days.)
  • References.
  • Current Awareness Service.
  • Selective Dissemination of Information.
  • Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).
  • Reprography - Photocopying, Printing, Scanning.
  • Resource sharing through Consortium of e-Resources in Agriculture (CeRA).
  • Preparation and supply of Identity cards to the library users and staff.
  • Organization of periodical Information of Literacy Programmes.

Infrastructure

Books

The library has a collection of about 4304 books. The books collection of the library is regularly updated with the inputs from the students and faculty members. Text and reference books required to meet the requirements of all the B.V.Sc. & A.H. course & M.V.Sc., courses have been procured, processed and kept for use by the library users.

e-Books

Collection of about 509 e-books at present and all these e-books are accessible through TANUVAS e Library.

Journals & Periodicals

Journals are the medium of scientific communication because of its up-to-datedness. The library subscribes about 12 journals.

e-Journals

The library has activated on-line access to about 75 e-journals through TANUVAS e- library

Back Volumes

The old journals are hardbound and kept as Back Volumes for reference. So far, the library has built up over 57 back volumes of journals.

CD-ROM Database

The Library has 55 CD-ROMs for the users to retrieve necessary data.

Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture (CeRA)

In addition to its own collections, the VCRI library has access to Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture (CeRA), an online journal consortium funded under NAIP of ICAR. CeRA provides access to about 3965 online journals covering various disciplines of agricultural sciences including veterinary and animal sciences.

Availability of VET e-BOOKS & Paves

Veterinary Science Electronic books is the collection of FLIP books developed for B.V.Sc., & A.H Degree Curriculum. PAVES: Program for Assessing Veterinary education of students. It contains Questions with solutions in Veterinary and Animal Sciences & is a rapid assessment tool for evaluating the knowledge in Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

System, Classification and Cataloguing

Open Access System and Colon Classification System (OPAC available)

Library Automation

Circulation activities of the library had been automated using "KOHA" Integrated Library Management System". Necessary equipments for automation of the library viz., computers, printer, scanner, barcode label printer, barcode reader etc., had been procured under ICAR Development Grant.

Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC)

The resources of the library in terms of books and other publications have been catalogued and the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the library is made available through the Library Network. At present, 8 computer terminals have been provided for the library users for OPAC.

Reprographic Facilities

Photocopying and Printing facilities are available to the library users at nominal charges. To improve the services, two multi-colour multi-functional digital copier (scanner, printer and copier) had been added. The students and staff are utilizing the facilities for their reprographic requirements.

Electronic Surveillance System

Electronic surveillance system has been installed in the library to ensure proper safety and security of the valuable library collection. The system is consisting of IR surveillance cameras and monitors to help the library administration to track the movements of the library users.

RFID Technology

RFID Technology of Document Identification and Library Security System have been implemented for the library functions and services, along with the following facilities: RFID Tags for protecting the documents, RFID Reader for Circulation transactions and RFID Antenna Alarm Gate.

Biometric Attendance System

A finger based biometric attendance system has been established at Library. Biometric attendance system is used to mark attendance of all staff members and as well as students. It provides exact information about every body's presence.

Resource Sharing

VCRI Library is a participating library under CeRA project and through this project it shares the library resources of about 123 libraries including SAU/SVU and ICAR institute libraries.

Information Literacy /Library Orientation Programmes / Guest Lectures

The VCRI Library periodically conducts information literacy / library orientation programmes to the library users. Guest Lectures & Awareness programmes are also being conducted for the benefit of library users regularly. And also hands on training gave to utilize the library online resources like OPAC, CeRA, Science Direct, Cab Direct Online , ICAR, WHO, OIE, TANUVAS Website E-learning sources, Google Scholar, Google Translator etc.

Book Exhibition

Book Exhibitions are organized regularly by the Library, VCRI, Tirunelveli for the benefit of students and faculties of the College. Approved Book Sellers of the University participated and displayed the latest books.
