MADRAS VETERINARY COLLEGE

DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY STATISTICS AND COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Genesis

Teaching of the subject of Statistics to the undergraduate (BVSc) students of Madras Veterinary College was started in the year 1959-60 utilizing the services of Statisticians available in the Directorate of Animal Husbandry on part time basis. A separate Department - Department of Animal Husbandry Statistics - for teaching Statistics to UG and PG students was started in the year 1966. The major activities of this Department were teaching animal husbandry statistics to undergraduate and postgraduate students and offering guidance to research students and faculty members in designing of experiments, processing of data and interpretation of experimental results. However, the objectives of this Department were later reoriented to incorporate the emerging Information Technology into the veterinary education, research and extension. Hence, the name of the Department too has been redesignated as the Department of Animal Husbandry Statistics and Computer Applications in 2000-01 by merging the University Computer Centre to this Department and empowering it to manage the computer networking of the University / College and the University website - www.tanuvas.ac.in.

VISION

To train the students of veterinary and animal sciences on statistical techniques and computer skills, to make research scholars and faculty proficient in required statistical and computing concepts, and to undertake need based research, so as to provide adequate insight to the scientists, planners and administrators to plan for ensuring sustainable livelihood and food security to rural community through livestock and poultry farming.

MISSION

To teach statistics to undergraduate and postgraduate students of veterinary and animal husbandry, to offer a postgraduate programme (MVSc - Biostatistics), to undertake need based and innovative research, to train students, research scholars and faculty on sophisticated statistical analyses and IT usage and to propagate appropriate technologies to the livestock and poultry farmers to ensure sustenance and upliftment of rural economy in Tamil Nadu.

Objectives

  • Promoting IT literacy among faculty and students and infusion of IT in to veterinary education and research.
  • Enabling development and use of multimedia in teaching and learning.
  • University's web site (www.tanuvas.ac.in) updation and management.
  • Development of computerized data base management systems in the areas such as animal disease reporting, herd management, GIS for livestock development, disease forecasting, hospital management, laboratory management etc.Development of computerized data base management systems in the areas such as animal disease reporting, herd management, GIS for livestock development, disease forecasting, hospital management, laboratory management etc.
  • Offering training on statistics (sampling strategies, experimental designs, data management and analysis using computers) for biological scientists, computer applications in animal sciences (use of software for analysis of data)
