Sports and Physical Education

The Department of Physical Education at Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Orathanadu is committed to promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, sportsmanship and holistic personality development among students. The department encourages active participation in sports and games by providing systematic training, quality infrastructure and opportunities to compete at university, state, national and international levels.

The department aims to foster discipline, teamwork, leadership qualities and a healthy lifestyle among students through regular sports activities, competitions and fitness programmes. Emphasis is placed on developing sporting excellence while nurturing the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.


Sports Infrastructure and Facilities

VCRI, Orathanadu provides excellent sports infrastructure and training facilities for students and staff. The campus is equipped with facilities for athletics, indoor and outdoor games, fitness training and recreational activities.

Major sports facilities available include:

  • 400-metre and 100-metre athletic tracks.
  • Long Jump and Triple Jump facilities.
  • Facilities for Shot Put, Discus Throw and Javelin Throw.
  • Cricket Ground and Cricket Net Practice Facility.Football Ground.
  • Football Ground.
  • Volleyball Court.
  • Kho Kho Court.
  • Kabaddi Court.
  • Shuttle Badminton Courts in Boys' and Girls' Hostels.
  • Facilities for Throw Ball and Tennikoit.
  • Indoor Gymnasiums for Boys and Girls.
  • Indoor Games Facilities including Table Tennis, Carrom and Chess.

Sports Activities

  • To promote participation and healthy competition, students are organized into four houses namely Green House, Red House, Yellow House and Blue House, comprising undergraduate and postgraduate students from all academic years.
  • The department regularly conducts inter-house sports and games competitions as part of the Annual Sports Meet to promote physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. Students actively participate in various sports disciplines and represent TANUVAS in intercollegiate, state-level, national-level and international competitions.

Major sporting events organized at VCRI, Orathanadu include:

  • Annual Inter-House Sports and Games Competitions.
  • TANUVAS Intercollegiate Kabaddi and Kho Kho Competitions (2025).
  • TANUVAS Premier League (TPL) – 8th Edition (2026).
  • Coaching and training programmes for university, state and national-level competitions.
  • Participation in intercollegiate sports meets and championships organized by TANUVAS and other institutions.

Student Achievements

  • Students of VCRI, Orathanadu have excelled in various sports disciplines at international, national and state levels.

International Achievement

  • Selvi K. Shivani secured a Bronze Medal in the 5th World Cup Tennikoit Championship (2023) held at Pretoria, South Africa. In recognition of her achievement, she received a cash award of ₹10 lakh from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2025.

National-Level Participation

  • C.M. Resheevarma represented the institution in the National Wrestling Championship conducted at Noida, Uttar Pradesh (2024).

State-Level Achievements

  • D. Alfeena Nancy and S. Bavya secured Third Place in the State-Level Chief Minister's Trophy Badminton Championship (2024).
  • I. Sakthivishal won a Gold Medal and a Bronze Medal in the State-Level Chief Minister's Trophy Chess Championships (2024).
  • Rahul Verma represented the institution in the State-Level Chief Minister's Trophy Cricket Tournament (2024).

Intercollegiate Achievements

  • The Women's Shuttle Badminton Team secured First Place in NIFTEM-T Flash'24 Sports Meet.
  • The Men's Table Tennis Team secured Third Place in NIFTEM-T Flash'24 Sports Meet.

Faculty Participation

  • Faculty members of VCRI, Orathanadu actively participated in the 6th Edition of the TANUVAS Inter-College Faculty Cricket Tournament held at VCRI, Udumalpet.
