Milestones

Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Orathanadu, established in 2012 under the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), has grown into a premier institution for veterinary education, research, clinical services and extension in the Cauvery Delta Region of Tamil Nadu.

Year Milestone Event
2011 Government of Tamil Nadu announced the establishment of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu under TANUVAS. Government Order (G.O. Ms. No.134) was issued on 09.11.2011.
2012 Veterinary Council of India (VCI) granted approval to start the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme with an annual intake of 40 students. The first batch of students was admitted and VCRI, Orathanadu was formally inaugurated on 09.10.2012.
2013 The Elite Murrah Buffalo Bull Mother Unit was established to support livestock development programmes. Ambulatory Veterinary Clinics were established to strengthen field veterinary services and practical clinical training.
2014 Establishment of Feed Mixing Unit as self financing scheme.
2015 Student intake was increased from 40 to 60 with VCI approval. The permanent academic and administrative buildings of VCRI, Orathanadu were inaugurated.
2016 Establishment of TANUVAS Smart Mineral Mixture Production Unit, Feed Mill, Operation Theatre and specialized livestock production units. The Animal Mobile Medical Ambulance (AMMA) service was launched.
2017 Modernized Piggery Breeding Unit, Regional Artificial Insemination Centre and Feed Processing Unit were established. Student intake was enhanced to 80. The first batch of students successfully completed the B.V.Sc. & A.H. programme.
2018 VCRI, Orathanadu received the All India Best College Award from Young National Wings, Bangalore. Ethnoveterinary Medicine Propaganda Vehicle was introduced.
2019 Veterinary University Disease Diagnostic Laboratory was established. VCRI, Orathanadu was included in the First Schedule of the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984. Postgraduate (M.V.Sc.) programmes were commenced. Students secured multiple University Gold Medals. The Ethnoveterinary Herbal Product Research and Development Centre was established under TANII funding, strengthening research and technology dissemination in ethnoveterinary medicine.
2020 The institute expanded its global academic engagement through international scientific conferences on livestock products, food safety, animal health and production.
2021 During the year, the institute's livestock farm units obtained Organic Certification under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), promoting sustainable livestock production systems.
2022 Student intake for the B.V.Sc. & A.H. programme was enhanced to 100 students. The Farmers’ Cell was established as a single-window platform for extension activities, and the Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU) was established to provide emergency veterinary services during disease outbreaks and natural disasters.
2023 Student intake for the B.V.Sc. & A.H. programme was enhanced to 100 students. The Farmers’ Cell was established as a single-window platform for extension activities, and the Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU) was established to provide emergency veterinary services during disease outbreaks and natural disasters.
2024 The Resource Centre for Pattinam Sheep was established under the NADP-RKVY Scheme to support conservation, research and development of the indigenous Pattinam sheep breed. Organization of the International Conference on Innovative Education, Research and Extension Approaches for Transmitting Scientific Know-how to Augment Livestock Production in the Contemporary Scenario.
2025 VCRI, Orathanadu successfully demonstrated compliance with the Veterinary Council of India Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education Regulations, 2016, during the VCI assessment conducted from 14–16 May 2025, reaffirming the institute's academic, clinical and infrastructural standards. The institute also organized the International Conference on One Health Frontiers: Integrating Animal, Human and Environmental Health in Infectious Disease Control in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, USA, and expanded its Human Resource Development initiatives for students and researchers.
2026 VCRI, Orathanadu has evolved into a comprehensive veterinary institution with 17 academic and clinical departments, postgraduate programmes, advanced research centres, modern clinical facilities and extensive outreach activities, significantly contributing to veterinary education, research, clinical services and livestock development in the Cauvery Delta Region.
