About NCC

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) Unit of Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Orathanadu functions under the 8/34 (TN) Independent Company NCC, Thanjavur. Established in 2019, the unit plays a vital role in developing character, leadership, discipline, patriotism and a spirit of service among students. The NCC Unit provides a platform for students to develop leadership qualities, civic responsibility, national integration and preparedness for future careers in defence, public service and allied sectors.

The unit aims to nurture responsible citizens by instilling values of discipline, teamwork, self-confidence and commitment to national service. Through regular training and participation in camps and community activities, NCC cadets acquire valuable life skills and leadership qualities that contribute to their personal and professional development.

NCC Training and Activities

The NCC training programme combines military-oriented training, personality development and community engagement activities to prepare cadets for leadership roles and responsible citizenship. The NCC cadets of VCRI, Orathanadu undergo structured training programmes aimed at developing discipline, leadership and personality traits. Training activities include:

  • Drill and parade training.
  • Weapon training and firing practice.
  • First aid and disaster preparedness.
  • Self-defence training.
  • Leadership development programmes.
  • Personality Development and Leadership Enhancement Activities.
  • Physical fitness and adventure-based training.
  • National integration and community service programmes.
  • Participation in Annual Training Camps (ATC), Combined Annual Training Camps (CATC), Leadership Camps and Armed Attachment Camps.

Cadets regularly participate in camps conducted by the NCC Directorate and Group Headquarters, gaining exposure to military culture, leadership skills, team-building exercises and national integration activities.

Social Service and Community Engagement

NCC cadets actively participate in various social service and community development programmes organized within and outside the campus. Major activities include:

  • Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Programme.
  • World Water Day Awareness Activities.
  • International Day of Yoga Celebrations.
  • Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Programmes.
  • World Environment Day Celebrations.
  • International Day Against Drug Abuse Awareness Programmes.
  • Poster Competitions and Awareness Campaigns on Social Issues.
  • Community Service, Environmental Awareness and Nation-Building Initiatives.

These activities promote social responsibility, environmental awareness and community engagement among students. Through these programmes, cadets contribute to social awareness, environmental sustainability, community welfare and national integration.

The NCC Unit of VCRI, Orathanadu has consistently demonstrated excellence in training camps, leadership activities, sports events and social service programmes.

Recent Achievements (2025–2026)

Camp Participation and Selections

  • Two NCC cadets participated in the Armed Attachment Camp, Secunderabad (2025) and gained exposure to military training and operational activities.
  • Two cadets successfully participated in the Basic Leadership Camp, Coimbatore (2025) and were subsequently selected for the Advanced Leadership Camp, Kerala (2025).
  • Twenty-three cadets participated in the CATC-cum Pre-DTE TSC-I Camp, Madurai (2025).
  • Thirty-three cadets participated in the NCC Rally organized by the NCC Unit, Thanjavur (2025).
  • Eight cadets participated in the Annual Training Camp (ATC), Kumbakonam (2025).

Awards and Recognitions

  • Cadet K. S. Shiva Shakthi Murugan received the Best Sportsman Medal (100 m Run) during the Armed Attachment Camp, Secunderabad.
  • Cadet T. M. Amru secured the Overall Best Performance in Speech Competition during the Basic Leadership Camp.
  • Cadet K. S. Shiva Shakthi Murugan won a Gold Medal in the Gun Firing Competition during the CATC-cum Pre-DTE TSC-I Camp.
  • The NCC Volleyball Team emerged as Winners in the camp-level Volleyball Competition.
  • The NCC Parade Team secured the Runners-up Position in the Parade Competition.
  • Cadet Arulanantham won a Silver Medal in the 100 m Run.
  • Cadet S. Ashish Rahman secured First Place in the Debate Competition during the Annual Training Camp.
  • Lt. Dr. K. Kannan received the prestigious Best ANO Award of 34 TN Independent Company NCC, Thanjavur, in 2026.

  • Participation in the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) Programme (2021) organized by the NCC Directorate.
  • Achievement of Overall Championship in Shooting Competition during the DTE RDC Training Camp at Idayapatti, Madurai.
  • First Prize in Elocution Competition during NCC training camp activities.
  • First Prize in Essay Writing Competition during NCC camp competitions.
  • Participation in the Republic Day Camp (RDC) Selection Process and Special RDC Selection Camp activities.
