The Department of Veterinary Pathology, a component body of the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli, was established in 2012. It was started to provide good quality teaching, diagnostic and Research service to the undergraduate students, field veterinarians, private practitioners, poultry industry, private and governmental Research Institutes and Wildlife authorities etc. The department is also involved in identification of infectious diseases and toxic agents in animals that are brought to the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex by examination of clinical samples. Besides, necropsy diagnosis and histopathological, cytological, haematological examinations, urinalysis and others are also performed in the department aiding in clinical diagnosis.
The department is having well established infrastructure facilities with the following items to cater to the needs of the students, farmers and researchers. As per the VCI Syllabus, the following courses are offered to the undergraduate students.
The department of Veterinary Pathology is actively involved in field oriented research and to diagnose and control of infectious, non-infectious diseases, cancer, toxicity studies and others.
The department is routinely involved in post-mortem examination of large animals, small animals, poultry, wild animals and fish and other diagnostic investigations including rabies diagnosis, toxicological investigation, biopsy, and cytological evaluation. During the period of 2013-14, the department was conducted 95 large animals, 119 poultry post mortems, 429 clinical samples were processed and 720 tissues were processed for histopathological examination. Twenty disease investigations were attended in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
Duck plague was recorded in Tirunelveli district. Oral papilloma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, mast cell tumour, nasal, oral transmissible venereal tumour, seminoma and necrotic colitis recorded in dogs and cattle. Contracaecum sp. Nematode parasite was recorded in the proventriculus of spot billed pelican. Dipylidium sp. Like cestode parasite was recorded in tree snake.
The Department of Veterinary Pathology is involved in providing PM examination training to the field veterinarian in diagnosis of diseases. In addition, the department is also involved in the diagnosis of rabies by brain impression smear. All the staff members of this department are actively taking classes to the cattle, sheep, goat and poultry farmers during the training programmes.
