VETERINARY COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE, TIRUNELVELI

Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli was established as a third constituent college of TANUVAS through the Tamil Nadu government G.O. Ms. No. 93, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (AH-6) Department dated 24/08/2011. Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University established the Veterinary College and Research Institute with full facilities for Veterinary Education, Research and Extension activities at Ramayanpatti in Tirunelveli, with a total area of 139.21 acres of land and with an initial budget of Rs. 12.59 crores (G.O. No. 93, dated 24/08/2011) to cater to the needs of the southern drought prone district farmers, who mainly depend on dairy, sheep and goat rearing for their daily livelihood and to augment the livestock production activities especially the small ruminant production in the southern districts. Subsequently a comprehensive G.O. sanctioning teaching and non-teaching posts and budgetary provision for civil works and equipment and other infrastructure for the years 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 has been issued (G.O.Ms.No. 222 dated 20.12.2012).

Departments

  • To start the B.V.Sc. & A.H degree programme, seven departments viz., Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production and Management, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex and Instructional Livestock Farm Complex were established in the year 2012. In addition to this, Departments such as Library science and Bio-engineering have also been established.
  • Subsequently in the same year, second year Departments viz. Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary Parasitology were also established. During the year 2012-13, third year Departments viz., Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Public Health, Livestock Products Technology and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education have been established.
  • During the year 2014-15, fourth year Departments viz., Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology and Veterinary Obstetrics and Gynaecology have also been established.
  • As on date, nineteen Departments have been established at the Ramayanpatti Campus.

Veterinary Council of India (VCI) team visit

  • A team of experts constituted by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI), New Delhi, inspected the facilities available in the college from 25.06.2012 to 27.06.2012 and the necessary approval was accorded to start first year B.V.Sc. & AH courses. Subsequently, the second year facilities were inspected by the VCI team, between 27.05.2013 and 29.05.2013 and necessary approval was accorded for the second year admission. The third year facilities were inspected by the VCI team, between 26.06.2014 and 28.06.2014 and necessary approval was accorded for the third year admission also. Likewise, the fourth year facilities were inspected by the VCI team between 08.07.2015 and 10.07.2015 and necessary approval was accorded for the fourth year admission. The fifth year facilities were inspected by the VCI team between 25.04.2016 and 27.04.2016 and necessary approval was accorded for the fifth year admission.

Students Strength

  • After getting the VCI approval in 2012, 40 students were admitted from the academic year 2012-13 to the academic year 2014-15 for B.V.Sc. & A.H. curriculum. From the academic year 2015-16 onwards, 60 students are being admitted into Veterinary College and Research institute, Tirunelveli for B.V.Sc. & A.H Course.

Provision of hostel facilities

  • Separate hostel facilities have been created for boys and girls. Student's mess facility has been created in the hostel from the inception onwards to provide healthy food at reasonable cost. One warden and four deputy wardens (including two lady deputy wardens) have been appointed to monitor the hostel activities
