DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS TECHNOLOGY

The Department of Livestock Products Technology was created as a constituent of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, Thanjavur District during the year 2012 with an aim to offer Under Graduate courses in B.V.Sc. and A.H.

This department imparts education in Livestock Products Technology for the Under Graduate students and trains individuals / farmers / unemployed youth / entrepreneurs for developing Human Resources in the field of meat and milk products processing & value addition.

This department has modern slaughter hall for hygienic meat processing along with modern meat examination laboratory and facilities for value addition of meat and meat products. In this department the process of establishment of "Establishment of Regional Dairy Entrepreneurs Training Facility" with model dairy plant for imparting entrepreneurship skill development abilities in milk processing and value addition of milk and milk products. In this department field oriented research programmes are being undertaken to cater the need with regard to livestock products technology in Delta and surrounding districts.

Objectives

To impart education in Livestock Products Technology for the Under Graduate students.
To develop Human Resources in the field of meat and milk products processing.
To undertake field oriented research programmes to cater the need of the livestock and poultry industry in Delta districts.

As per the VCI Regulation, the department is offering the following courses:

LPT 311: Milk and Milk products Technology (1+1)
LPT 312: Abattoir Practices and Animal Product Technology (1+1)
LPT 321: Meat Science (1+1)

Ongoing Projects:

NADP project on "Establishment of Regional Dairy Entrepreneurs Training Facility at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu" - Budget – 171.5 lakhs.
TANUVAS Revolving Fund Scheme on "Wholesome Meat Production and Preparation of Value Added Meat Products for Public sale" – Budget – 0.50 lakhs.
