With a view to give a new impetus to livestock sector and to improve the livelihood of farmers belonging to Cauvery delta region, Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu propodsed the establishment of a new Veterinary College and Research Institute at Orathanadu, Thanjavur district under Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai. This college is located at Orathanadu, 25 km from Thanjavur on the way to Pattukottai. The total area of the campus is 206.96 acres.
The Government of Tamil Nadu had issued orders for the establishment of a new Veterinary College and Research Institute at Orathanadu, Thanjavur as per the G.O. Ms. No. 134, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (AH-6) Department dated 09/11/2011.Thanjavur district. A comprehensive government order sanctioning man power, civil works and equipments for the year 2012-13,2013-14 and 2014-15 has been issued [G.O.(Ms.)No.223 dated 20.12.2012] giving full functional status to the college as per VCI norms.

To start the B.V.Sc&A.H degree programme initially seven departments viz., Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry, Animal Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production and Management ,Instructional Livestock Farm Complex and Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex have been established fully with required manpower, equipments and floor space as per norms of Veterinary Council of India (VCI). A total of 40 students have been admitted and the classes have been handled from 20.09.2012. Subsequently the second year departments, viz., Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Parasitology and Veterinary Pathology were also established. During the year 2013-14 third year departments, viz., Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Public health, Livestock Products Technology and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension have also been established. During 2014-15, the three clinical departments, viz., Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology and Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics have been established. As on date, seventeen departments have been established in this college. From the academic year 2015-16 onwards the intake of students has been increased to 60 with the approval of VCI.
A total of 5 lecture halls are available for the students with multimedia projectors and net connection for the students. A separate examination hall is available for conducting exams
A computer centre has been established to provide internet services for the benefit of students and staff. Computers in various departments are connected with LAN. Students are given free hands on training in Computer Applications.
Ambulatory Veterinary clinics were opened by the Honourable Minister for Housing and Urban Development Thiru.R.Vaithilingam at two villages Kannathangudi Melaiyur and Telungankudikadu for exposing the undergraduates in rural veterinary clinical services as well as providing treatment facilities in the nearby villages.
Inauguration of Clinical club Clinical club was declared open by Dr. R.Jayaprakash, Director of Clinics, TANUVAS on 11.03.2016 for better understanding and rationale analysis of clinical cases by undergraduate students.
The College Library was established from the inception of the college. The area of library is around 8,037.30 Square feet and is functioning in second floor main building and partitioned into different sections such as circulation centre, e-resources centre, Reference section, Stock room, Xerox room, Journal Section, Technical Section and Staff Rooms. The main objective of the is to support the educational and research programs of the Veterinary College and Research Institute by providing access to information consistent with the present and anticipated educational and research functions of this institute. The Library is open on weekdays from 09.00 a.m to 08.00 p.m. (Monday to Friday), from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays and 9.00 am to 2.00 pm on Sunday. The library has a rich collection of books and journals in the field of Veterinary Science. Broadband facilities are also provided to students and faculty for access to internet and online journals. The library has a 1591 collection of books (including general and competitive exam bosoks), 15 journals, 98 veterinary CD ROMs in the field of Veterinary Science, 17 magazines and newspapers (Tamil & English). The library implementing institutional repositories on intranet. The Library services include document lending, reference, Current Awareness Service, Selective Dissemination of Information, reprography, printing, scanning, Online Document Delivery Service (ODDS). The Library has an institutional base of 254 member (155 students and 99 staff).
Separate hostel facilities have been created for boys and girls. Students mess facility has been created in the hostel from the inception to provide healthy food at reasonable cost and RO drinking water. One warden and three deputy wardens (One lady deputy warden) have been appointed to monitor the hostel activities. Facilities have been provided for indoor and outdoor games, computer centre with Wi-Fi connectivity, reading room, TV hall, washing machine and water heater for the benefit of hostel inmates.
NSS unit of VCRI, Orathanadu functioning with one unit of 100 NSS volunteers and one NSS Programme Officer. The Motto of the NSS is ‘ Not Me But YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self- less service. It emphasizes that the welfare of an individual ultimately leads to the welfare of the society. Under this unit, regular and special camps are conducted routinely.
Red Ribbon Club was inaugurated at VCRI, Orathanadu on 07.10.2014. As part of International Youth day the red ribbon club has jointly organized a human chain procession along with Thanjavur district AIDS prevention and control unit to create public awareness on AIDS prevention. This club has also organized painting, slogan, sketching competitions to explore the hidden talents of undergraduate students in connection to AIDS awareness. These were the activities of the Red ribbon club in the year 2015-16.
VC&RI, Orathanadu has been conducting regular health and mass vaccination programmes. In the year 2015, mass vaccination programmes against diseases like FMD and Rabies in the surrounding villages were conducted. Flood relief camps were organized at Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam to ensure health and well being of livestock after the deluge in December, 2015. Regular TV programmes and Radio talks are delivered by the faculty for the benefit of farming community.

Tree plantation programme was conducted as a part of energy conservation day
Rabies awareness visit was conducted for the UG students of the college which included animal birth control operations
