GENESIS
Veterinary University Training and Research Centre was established under the Control of Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU), Coimbatore as Poultry Research and Development Centre (PRDC) on 19.05.1981 (Proc.No.R.2/45-12 (6)/81, Dt: 26.4.1981 of the Registrar, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore). This centre was originally established to cater the needs of poultry sector in erstwhile Coimbatore district and its surrounding area where the commercial broiler farming is gearing up as emerging farming sector. Later, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai was founded on 20.09.1989 as the first Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Asia and subsequently this centre was brought under the control of TANUVAS and named as University Training and Research Centre, Tirupur to cater the needs of livestock and poultry farmers of this area. It was later renamed as Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Tirupur from 08.04.1999 and is presently functioning under the Directorate of Extension Education, TANUVAS, Chennai.
Location
The Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Tirupur is functioning in Veterinary Hospital Campus which is just opposite to old bus stand on Kamaraj Road, Tirupur 641 604.
OBJECTIVES
Transfer of livestock and poultry related technologies including natural resources management through front line extension / change agents
Strengthening livestock and poultry research – extension linkage for developing need specific technologies
Promotion of livestock production eco-system through TANVUAS / entrepreneurs for sustaining livestock based livelihoods
Services Offered
Conduct of on-campus and off-campus training programmes on various aspects of livestock and poultry farming to the practicing farmers, women self help groups, landless labourers, rural poor, unemployed youth, economically weaker sections and entrepreneurs. The various programmes offered are:
Dairy farming
Goat and sheep rearing
Desi chicken rearing
Pig farming
Rabbit rearing
Japanese quail
Turkey farming
Preparation, packaging and marketing of value-added milk and meat products
The topic of interest as and when needed by the farmers
Advisory services on livestock and poultry farming – in person, by post, through telephone, touch screen, E-mail etc.
Farm visits at initial stages of establishment, during disease outbreaks and offering technical advice as and when needed by the farmers.
Conduct of post-mortem and collection of clinical materials for investigation.
Screening of samples at the laboratory and dispatch of samples to the constituent colleges, laboratories of TANUVAS and suggesting suitable remedial measures.
Laboratory tests such as bacteriological, serological and microscopical examinations are being conducted from samples to confirm the disease.
Laboratory investigations like ABST, water sample test and A1/A2 testing
Demonstration of cultivation and feeding of Azolla to the animals
Village adopting programme – Vadugapalayampudur village, Palladam,Tirupur district.
Front Line Demonstration of Livestock rearing techniques to the farmers
On Farm Trial on various scientific techniques to the benefit of farmers
Transfer of technology are being carried out from this center by publishing and distributing pamphlets to the farmers and by publishing articles on health and management of livestock and poultry in local vernacular and journals meant for farmers for the benefit of farming community.
Sending Farm Radio Bulletins to the All India Radio, Coimbatore on training programmes, disease forecasts and managemental practices.
Transfer of modern scientific technologies and package of practices on livestock and poultry farming to the farmers.
Participating in the animal health camps, mass contact programmes, infertility camps and N.S.S. Camps organized by the line departments, non-governmental organizations and other educational institutions in the district.
Documentation of success stories of the farmers.
Organizing farmers meet, forums etc. and conducting exhibitions on livestock and poultry farming.
Sale of University publications
Sale of University products like Mineral Mixture, salt licks etc.,
Motivation of farmers to attend Seminars, Workshops etc. organized by other units of TANUVAS.
Self Employment Training Programmes on dairy farming, goat farming and desi fowl rearing
Coordination with other University Schemes- Collection of field samples, specimens etc.

Facilities / infrastructure available
This centre is having 15 cents of land in Veterinary Hospital campus, opposite to old bus stand, Tirupur with permanent building. This centre is having laboratory cum training hall to facilitate training to the farmers in regular interval apart from space for staff and office work. The laboratory is equipped with minimum laboratory equipments to do all diagnostics activities as mentioned above. Three azolla demo plots are being maintained in this centre for the benefit of farmers. The farmers who are all willing to grow azolla are being given with azolla seed and training to rearing the azolla. Nearly 86 kg of azolla seed was given to needy 172 farmers during the year 2020-21.

Salient achievements
Occurrence of Cotugnia sp. and Choanotaenia infundibulaum, prevalence of C.infundibiulum being the first report from domestic fowls in Tamil Nadu.
Eimeria brunetti causing distinct ileo-rectal lesions occasionally involving caecum also was encountered in few cases. The incidence of this species is reported for the first time from domestic fowls in Tamil Nadu.
Hydropericardium-Hepatitis Syndrome (Leechi Disease) was recorded in broilers of Palladam area, first in South India.
