GENESIS

Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Cuddalore was initially established in the year 1998 at Neyveli township. Then the centre was shifted to Cuddalore in the year 2006 for the convenience of farming community and was functioning in a rental building at Varadharajan Nagar. Subsequently, the Registrar, Tamil Agricultural University was kind enough to a lot 25 cents of land at Sugarcane Research Station campus, Semmandalam. Accordingly, a permanent building was constructed at Gundu Salai, Semmandalam, Cuddalore - 607001 and occupied on 01.02.2016. This centre is adjacent to Regional Joint Director of Agriculture office.



OBJECTIVES

  • Transfer of livestock and poultry related technologies including natural resources management through front line extension / change agents.
  • Strengthening livestock and poultry research – extension linkage for developing need specific technologies.
  • Promotion of livestock production eco-system through TANVUAS / entrepreneurs for sustaining livestock based livelihoods.

Services Offered by the Centre

  • On-campus training programmes are offered on Dairy farming, Sheep and Goat farming, Native Chicken farming, Backyard poultry farming, Broiler farming, Turkey farming, Japanese quail farming, Rabbit farming, Piggery, Value added milk products preparation, Green fodder production, Disease management in livestock and poultry farming and other livestock training on need basis.
  • Online training programmes are conducted on need basis on livestock and poultry farming through audio / Video conference programmes.
  • Off-campus training programmes are conducted on livestock and poultry related topics on need basis and also to state and central government Scheme beneficiaries in Cuddalore district utilizing advanced audio–visual aids.
  • Out-reach training programmes, health camps, mass contact programmes, infertility camps, seminars, workshops, etc., are also organized in co-ordination with the line departments, non-governmental organizations and other educational research institutions.
  • Self-Employment Training Programmes on livestock and poultry farming instituted by the Directorate of Distance Education, TANUVAS, Chennai are carried out at VUTRC, Cuddalore.
  • Advisory services on various livestock and poultry farming through telephone, mobile phone, e-mail, touch screen kiosk and in person are rendered.
  • Technical advices/disease investigation is given at field level on need basis through farm visits.
  • Dissemination of technologies through guest lectures, exhibitions, by way of radio talks, popular articles, pamphlets, books, journals, newspapers, etc.
  • Conduct of post-mortem at farm level or at VUTRC, cuddalore for disease confirmation and suggesting prophylactic measures.
  • Collection and examination of samples for disease diagnosis and prevention.
  • Organizing farmers meet to disseminate the technology to the farmers and to assess the farmer’s problems at field level and to solve the same in livestock management.
  • Motivating young farmers, self-help group women, school drop outs, unemployed graduates on "Entrepreneurship through livestock farming practices".
  • Creating awareness about the importance of green fodder production and feeding of mineral mixture and vaccination in order to improve the productivity and health status of the livestock.
  • Field level demonstrations (FLD)/On-farm research trails (OFT) were conducted at field level on proven technologies or management practices followed in livestock and poultry farming to motivate the farming community to adopt the latest technologies.
  • Village will be adopted under village adoption scheme within cuddalore district and Animal health camp, exhibition, Swatch bharath programme, inputs like fodder seeds, mineral mixture, salt lick etc. distribution, awareness programmes were conducted in the adopted village.
  • Sale of University publications, University products, fodder seeds, TANUVAS mineral mixture and salt lick.
  • Assisting in the implementation of University Schemes and projects of other line departments.
  • Organizing and conducting workshops, seminars, symposiums for the benefit of livestock owners.

Technologies Transferred

  • Enrichment of paddy straw with urea to Women Self Help Groups and Dairy farmers.
  • Azolla cultivation techniques – an alternate feed for livestock and poultry farmers.
  • Inclusion of TANUVAS mineral mixture, salt lick in livestock feed to increase productivity and improve health status of the animals.
  • Sale of fodder seeds.
  • Preparation methods of various value added milk products to Women Self Help Groups for self-entrepreneurship and also to increase their income from the milk by-products.
  • Green fodder production to reduce the feed cost and to improve the productivity of farm animals.
  • Preparation of low cost concentrate feed to reduce the production cost among the for livestock and poultry farmers.

Current Research Projects

  • Scheme on “Revitalising Dairy Cattle through TANUVAS GRAND Supplement to enhance the Productivityand Profitability” sponsored by NADP, Government of India (RKVY RAFTAAR 2020-21).
  • Scheme on “Sensitizing Farmers on "Nutritional Supplemental Strategy" developed at TANUVAS to increase productivity in dairy cattle and mitigate methane emission sponsored by Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization Project (TN-IAMP).
  • Special Programmes Organised

    Training to beneficiaries of:

    • Tamil Nadu government Scheme for desi chicken/dairy & goat farming.
    • Skill Development of Rural Youth programme sponsored by Government of India.
    • Training on Backyard desi chicken rearing and azolla cultivation under Magalir Thittam.
    • Capacity Adoption of Technology programmes sponsored by NABARD.
    • Training on Scientific Goat Farming practices under Pudhu Vazhu Thittam project.
    • Training on Cattle concentrate feed under Puthaka Thittam project.
    • Organising ATMA Farm Field Schools.
    • NGO sponsored training programmes.
