DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY MICROBIOLOGY


The Department of Veterinary Microbiology was established at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Udumalpet in the year 2020 with the objective to offer quality education to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. undergraduate students.


Objectives

  • To impart quality undergraduate education to B.V.Sc.& A.H. Students
  • To undertake research activities on livestock and poultry diseases
  • To examine various clinical samples for diagnosis of livestock and poultry diseases
  • To impart training to field veterinarians on recent advances in Veterinary Microbiology
  • To create awareness on animal diseases control and prevention to the farmers

Education

The department focuses on offering quality education on Veterinary Microbiology to the undergraduate students.


As per the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education - 2016 regulations prescribed by Veterinary Council of India, the following courses are offered to the undergraduate students:

II Professional Year – B.V.Sc. & A.H.

Veterinary Microbiology (Paper I and II) – 3+2 credit hours:

  • Unit-I: General & Systematic Veterinary Bacteriology.
  • Unit-II: Veterinary Mycology.
  • Unit-III: Microbial Biotechnology.
  • Unit-IV: Veterinary Immunology and Serology.
  • Unit-V: General and Systematic Veterinary Virology.

Laboratory facilities

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology has 3 laboratories viz. Bacteriology and Mycology, Virology and Immunology laboratories, which are endowed with state-of-the-art facilities for conduct of advanced research in Veterinary Microbiology and biotechnology to aid in diagnosis of livestock and poultry diseases.

Department activities

  • The department offers the following diagnostic services on regular basis: Isolation of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Culture of bacteria and determination of their sensitivity to antibiotics. Virus propagation in cell culture and immunodiagnosis.
  • Molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases of domestic animals and poultry.
  • Investigation of livestock and poultry disease outbreaks in and around Tirupur District in collaboration with other TANUVAS units and line departments.
  • Awareness programme to the farmers on livestock and poultry diseases.

Vision

  • Establishment of a zonal level disease diagnostic Laboratory for livestock, poultry and wild animals
