DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY MEDICINE


The Department of Veterinary Medicine was started in the year 2012 with an aim to make the UG and PG students as clinicians to prepare and bolster the needs of the growing demand in the subject of Veterinary Medicine. The department has two major spheres such as clinical and non-clinical activities.


Objectives

  • To impart Undergraduate education in Veterinary Medicine to Undergraduate / Post graduate and Doctoral degree students.
  • To provide medical treatment to sick animals and to train Undergraduates/ Post graduate and Doctoral degree in the management of clinical cases.
  • To offer guidance to research students.
  • To provide information to the animal owners in prevention of diseases and management of sick animals by way of extension activities.
  • To function as a referral unit for Southern districts of Tamil Nadu .

Education

Under graduate courses

The Department is currently offering the courses such as General Medicine, Systemic Diseases, Metabolic and Deficiency Disorders, Animal welfare, Ethics, and Jurisprudence, Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine, Bacterial, Fungal and Rickettsial Diseases, Viral and Parasitic Diseases for UG students.

Post graduate courses

The Department is currently offering the courses such as VCM 601 Ruminant Clinical Medicine –I (2+0),VCM 602 Ruminant Clinical Medicine –II (2+0) ,VCM 603 Equine Clinical Medicine (2+0),VCM 604 Canine and Feline Clinical Medicine (2+0) ,VCM 605 Swine Clinical Medicine (1+0) , VCM 606 Avian Medicine (1+0) , VCM 607 Zoo Wild & Laboratory Animal Medicine (2+0), VCM 608 Clinical Diseases of Animal Species of Regional Importance * (1+0), VCM 609 Production Diseases (2+0), VCM 610 Diseases of Animals Caused by Toxicants (1+0), VCM 611 Veterinary Forensic Medicine (1+1), VCM 612 Clinical Diagnostic Techniques (0+2), VCM 613 Veterinary Emergency Medicine (0+2) , VCM 614 Clinical Practice (I+3 ), VCM 615 Clinical Practice II (0+3) ,VCM 691 Master’s Seminar (1+0) and VCM 699 Master’s Research (20) for PG students.

Facilities

The following units function under the Department of Veterinary Medicine in the veterinary clinical complex, VCRI, Tirunelveli such as Small animal Medicine (Out Patient Unit, Infectious Disease Unit, Vaccination Unit and Emergency and critical Care Unit), Large animal Medicine (Out Patient Unit, In Patient Unit) and Special diagnostic units such as Small animal Ultrasound Unit, Electrocardiography Unit, Echocardiography Unit and Endoscopy Unit. The two laboratories viz., Clinical medicine and Preventive medicine laboratory are equipped with instruments such as Cooling Centrifuge, Electronic Monopan balance, Distillation Unit Spectrophotometers (Digital) Incubators with accessories, Hot-air Ovens with accessories, Dark field microscope Microscopes (monocular binocular), Water bath with accessories, Microscope with attachment for microphotographs, Deep freezer (-20ºC), Laminar air flow, Electrolyte Analyser (Digital), Tonometer Rumen Infusion Pump and ELISA reader.

Extension

The Department is involved in various extension programmes on livestock and poultry production as and when required on need basis. This department acts as an expert member in medicine stream in field disease investigation and therapeutic teams as and when required on need basis. Moreover, this department assists the veterinary clinical complex in conducting health and vaccination camps across the Tirunelveli district.
