LIVESTOCK FARM COMPLEX


The Department of Livestock Farm Complex (LFC) was established on 2020 as per the mandate of MSVE (2016) with the objective of providing quality education, research experience and extension education to under graduate students. To cater the above needs, the Livestock Farm complex is maintaining different species and breeds of Livestock and poultry.

Objectives

  • To impart hands on training on various Livestock farm practices to the under graduate students.
  • To carry out area specific research on Livestock and poultry.
  • To develop improved varieties and supply germplasms of Livestock and poultry.
  • To establish model fodder plots and supply of fodder slips and seeds to the farming community.

Education

As per the MSVE 2016 regulations prescribed by VCI, the department is offering the under-graduate courses on Livestock Farm Practices – 0+2 Credit hours – III Professional year of B.V.Sc. & A.H. students. In this course, Students are being trained on familiarization of breeds, identification methods of animals, dentition and age determination, housing of animals, feeding practices, poultry farm and hatchery managemental practices and other routine health care management of farm animals.
Various units of Livestock Production Management (2+2)courses for the first professional year and Animal Nutrition (3+1) courses for the second Professional year are being handled by the faculty members of Livestock Farm Complex.

1. Livestock Production Management (2+2)- First Professional Year

  • UNIT-4 :Zoo animals production management
  • UNIT-5 : Animal Welfare
  • UNIT-6 : Poultry Production and Management
  • UNIT-7 : Diversified poultry production and hatchery management

2. Animal Nutrition (3+1) – Second Professional Year

  • UNIT-2 Applied Ruminant Nutrition-I
  • UNIT-3 Applied Ruminant Nutrition-II
  • UNIT-4 Applied Non-Ruminant Nutrition

Thrust areas of Research

Short-term goals

  • Evaluation of production and reproduction parameters of livestock and poultry
  • To impart hands on training to the under graduate students on Livestock Farm Practices

Long-term goals

  • Conservation of native animal genetic resources of Theni and adjoining districts.
  • Development of new varieties of livestock and poultry to suit local agroclimatic conditions

EXTENSION

  • Farm advisory services.
  • Skill development Trainings programs for rural youth, farmers, farm women on layer, broiler, sheep,goat and cattle farming.
  • Enlightening of farm activities to the farmers, school children during the exposure visit arranged by various line Departments viz., Agriculture, ATMA Scheme, NABARD and Non-Governmental Organizations.
