Department of Veterinary Parasitology


The Department of Veterinary Parasitology was established in the year 2023 and has two laboratories viz. Helminthology lab & Entomology and Protozoology Lab which are endowed with state of the art facilities for education and research in Veterinary Parasitology to aid in diagnosis of livestock and poultry diseases. Equipment worth of Rs. 89,64,400/- was purchased for teaching of undergraduate students, research and diagnostic purpose.
The department focuses on offering quality education on Veterinary Parasitology to the undergraduate students as per the MSVE’ 2016. It also renders diagnostic services to the allied departments of this college, field veterinarians and livestock and poultry farmers. Disease investigation is regularly carried out during outbreaks for diagnosis and suitable control and prevention measures are being advised for the benefit of farming communities.


Objectives

  • To offer standard quality education in the subject of veterinary parasitology for the undergraduate students.
  • To carry out research in various livestock and poultry parasitic diseases.
  • To offer diagnostic services for endo and ecto parasitic diseases of livestock and poultry and to offer advice on their control and prevention.
  • To cater laboratory facilities for the benefit of PG and Ph.D., research scholars.

Diagnostic services offered

  • Isolation and identification of GI helminths, insects, acarines and protozoans.
  • Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of parasitic load in faeces and blood.
  • Anthelmintic efficacy.
  • Anthelmintic and acaricidal resistance.
  • Rendering services on usage of anthelmintic and insecticides to farmers and entrepreneurs.

Education

Veterinary Parasitology (3+2) is being offered during Third UG Professional year which includes:

  • Unit 1 - General Veterinary Parasitology
  • Unit 2 - Trematodes and Cestodes of Veterinary Importance
  • Unit 3 - Nematodes of Veterinary Importance
  • Unit 4 – Arthropods of Veterinary Importance
  • Unit 5 – Protozoa of Veterinary Importance

Research and Extension Activities

  • Need oriented research works on cattle, sheep and goats and poultry farms are being carried out.
  • Routine processing of faecal and blood samples submitted to this department from other departments of this institute, nearby dispensaries and farms for the diseases diagnosis.
  • Disease investigation is rendered during the outbreak within and outside district.

Infrastructure and facilities

Protozoology Laboratory

  • This laboratory is equipped with penta head microscope with smart TV, deep freezer (-80ᵒC), micro haematocrit centrifuge, hot air oven, auto calve, incubator, pH meter, ordinary centrifuge, for conducting UG practical class and to carry out basic research in protozoology.

Entomology and Acarology Laboratory

  • This lab is endowed with stereoscope, stereo zoom microscope to view insect and acarine specimens.

Helminthology Laboratory

  • This lab is provided with binocular microscope, ordinary centrifuge, trinocular microscope, phase contrast microscope, high speed centrifuge, refrigerator, micro centrifuge, weighing balance, Mcmaster slide to carry out faecal egg count, faecal culture for the larval isolation and identification.
