CATTLE AND BUFFALO BREEDING UNIT

Breeds Maintained : Jersey X Red Sindhi crossbred cattle, Murrah buffaloes

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Jersey X Red Sindhi crossbred cattle was evolved
  • The Jersey X Sindhi animals were crossed to attain a lactation yield of 2500 kg, age at first calving of 30 months, inter-calving period of 15 months and fat percentage of 5.0
  • An elite herd of Murrah buffaloes are maintained on scientific management
  • The economic and productive traits are being recorded to assess their performances

SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Includes biogas plant, smokeless chula for milk product preparation, automatic and bucket milking parlours and CPCSEA calf shed

SHEEP BREEDING UNIT

    Commencement : 1957

    Breeds Maintained : Madras Red

  • Release of new strain of sheep - "Kattupakkam Red Sheep"
  • The strain was released in the year 1995. It is an important meat breed in India. The strain is fast growing, easy to handle, suitable for wide range of conditions and comparatively resistant to diseases.

The mature ram and ewe weigh 22 and 21.1 kg respectively. The skin of Kattupakkam Red Sheep is preferred in tanning industry due to better gains in the finished leather. The meat of the strain is finely textured, tender with a pleasant meaty odour and flavour.

  • Developed Three-way synthetic pigs with low fat and lean meat A new breed, ‘TANUVAS KPM GOLD’ (75% LWY ×25% Desi), was released in 2017
