The Department of Extension was established in the year 1963 with an aim to teach under graduate students in the aspects of sociology, rural development and transfer of scientific know-how to the farming community. From 2000 –2001 onwards the department offered three courses in accordance with the VCI regulations. During the year 1990-91, Post-graduate programme on Animal Husbandry Extension was introduced. The Department of Communication and Entrepreneurship was merged with this department on 01.05.2003 and was renamed as the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension and Entrepreneurship. The Department as per VCI is currently referred as Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education.
The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education (VAHEE) aims to be a pioneering unit in tech based instruction to students and in the transfer of innovative technologies to the farmers based on the perceived needs.

In the year 1990-91, Post-graduate programme on Animal Husbandry Extension was introduced, for the first time in South India, with an idea of developing manpower for strengthening the extension institutes and research centers. In the year 2005, Ph.D., programme on Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension was introduced at Madras Veterinary College. Periodical field visits are undertaken by under graduate and postgraduate students as a part of their curriculum. This helps in understanding the activities of the farmers, officials, extension personnel, etc and also in the development of various teaching aids and in the conduct of extension activities like awareness programmes, campaigns, mass contact programmes etc.
The Department is involved in research in various thrust areas namely Technological needs, Impact analysis, training methodologies, Gender studies, Adoption studies, Constraint analysis, content analysis, KVK and other institutional studies, Mass media, ICT, Distance education, Expert systems, student assessment studies, livestock farming systems, Ethnography studies, Breed conservation, Ethno veterinary studies, Economic Analysis, Climate Change, Consumption behavior, human resource management Human Animal Conflict, Disaster management and Market led Extension.

An International symposium on Animals in Disaster was jointly organized by Veterinary Emergency Response Unit, South zone and Department of veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in association with Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk reduction Agency (TNDRRA) and World Animal Protection (WAP) on 26th and 27th September 2018 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai.The recommendations of various experts participated in the symposium were pooled and discussed to frame Tamil Nadu state animal disaster plan at the end of the symposium. The outcome of the symposium was of great help to all stakeholders involved in Disaster Management.
An International Seminar on Innovative Extension Management for uplifting livelihood of farmers – Status, Initiatives and Way forward was jointly organized by Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Telangana on 27.06.2019 & 28.06.2019 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai- 600 007. A total of 220 participants representing ICAR institutes, State Agricultural Universities, State Veterinary Universities, State Department of Animal Husbandry and Aavin from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, West Bengal attended the seminar. In addition delegates from Bangladesh, USA, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka and Nigeria participated in this programme. A total of 125 research papers were presented along with invited and lead papers in five themes by the delegates from India and Abroad. Dr. Usha Rani I.A.S, Director General, National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Telangana released the compendium and offered inaugural address.
A Training of Trainers (ToT) programme for faculty of TANUVAS on Animal Disaster Management was organised from 04.02.2020 to 06.02.2020 by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai of TANUVAS in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency (TNDRRA), World Animal Protection, New Delhi at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai.
An Orientation programme cum workshop on “Key Informant Interviews” was organized by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai from 20.11.2019 to 27.11.2019 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai. The Programme was conducted as a part of the UKRI – GCRF sponsored One Health Poultry Hub multi-institutional Project carried out by TANUVAS. Prof. Tony Barnett, Professor (Social sciences), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, United Kingdom and one of the investigators of the One Health Poultry Hub project acted as a resource person for the orientation programme cum workshop.
A National webinar entitled “Innovative extension strategies for sustainable livestock development” was organised by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai on 29.04.2021 through online mode. A total of 498 participants from all over India registered for the webinar and participated in the proceedings. Dr. K.N. Selvakumar, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS inaugurated the National webinar, released a Video module on Integrated Livestock farming and delivered the inaugural address. Dr. P. Kumaravel, Organising Secretary of the webinar and Professor and Head, Dept of Veterinary and AH Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai delivered the welcome address. Dr.Ghadevaru Sarath Chandra, Dean, Madras Veterinary College offered the introductory remarks.
The Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU) functioning under the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai conducted a three day regional level training programme on “Management of Animals in Disaster” from 27.09.2022 to 29.09.2022 to the Veterinary Assistant Surgeons working in the Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Tamil Nadu deputed from the coastal districts viz., Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Viluppuram. A total of 54 Veterinary Assistant Surgeons were trained on the management of animals in disaster with 12 Modules comprising of lectures, hands on training, table top exercises and simulation exercises.
The department provides advisory services through telephone, by post and in-person to those farmers visiting the college. The exhibits useful for the farming community are displayed in the department for the visiting farmers. The department has a well equipped video and audio recording and editing facilities. Audio programmes are broadcast through All India Radio. Audio lesson has been produced by the department on 'The Effect of Climate Change on Animal production' for enriching the knowledge of livestock farmers. Audio song CDs has been produced on dairy farming, goat farming and poultry production.
The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College in collaboration with National Innovation Foundation, India organised the result sharing workshops on “Importance of Indigenous Poultry Technologies in Native Chicken Farming” on 28.03.2022 and 29.03.2022 at Directorate of Extension Education, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai – 600 051 under the scheme entitled “On farm demonstration and popularization of indigenous poultry technologies among backyard poultry farmers in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu”. A total of 60 poultry farmers participated and benefited in the workshop.
A livestock health campaign was conducted on 14.03.2020 at Kalyanakuppam village by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education. MVC, Chennai. A total of 120 animals were administered dewormers, deticked and rendered infertility treatment. A method demonstration on Value added milk products preparation was conducted as a part of the camp for the benefit of farmers.
A Rabbit farmers linkage meet was organized by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai on 13.07.2017 at MVC, Chennai as a part of the special problem on “Constraints in Rabbit farming”. A total of 27 Rabbit farmers and rabbit meat traders participated in the meet.
The Department has the following well equipped laboratories/units to impart teaching to the students to develop various teaching aids for dissemination of scientific information to the farming community in a conducive learning situation.
