Genesis

Department of Dairy Science was started in the year 1947 as an independent unit considering the important role of dairy sector in terms of its contribution to GDP of our country. Thereafter, this department was involved in educating the students pursuing Veterinary Science on the subjects of Dairy Science and Animal management, leading to the award of G.M.V.C. degree. Dr. C.N. Stark from USA was appointed as the first Professor of Dairy Science. This department has a full-fledged Dairy Plant with food processing equipments, where processing of milk and dairy products preparation are being carried out throughout the year.

Objectives

  • To offer Under graduate and Post Graduate courses in Dairy Science
  • To provide hands-on-training for the entrepreneurs on value added dairy products

Education

U.G. Programme – BVSc & AH

Internship training on Livestock Products Technology (Dairy Science) and Experiential learning courses are being offered at Model Dairy Plant for the students of Madras Veterinary College, Chennai and Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, Orathanadu and Tirunelveli.

M.V.Sc in Livestock Products Technology, M.V.Sc in Dairy Microbiology & PhD in Livestock Products Technology (Dairy Science)

Consequent to the upgradation of the college during 1958 as a Post Graduate Institute, this Department started offering Master degree in Dairy Science. Ph.D. degree programme in Dairy Science was started in 1978.
From 1985 onwards, this department was offering Post Graduate degree in the three disciplines of Dairy Science viz. Dairy Technology, Dairy Microbiology and Dairy Chemistry. From 2004, this department was offering Master’s programme in Dairy Science for M.V.Sc. students. From 2010, this department is offering combined subject as LPT (Dairy Science) for M.V.Sc. students.

One year - full time - PG Diploma course - Two semesters - 45 days of In-Plant training - Externship.

Research

This Department has completed Ten research schemes funded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research besides, Department of Science and Technology, DBT and TNSCST. The department has been at the forefront in implementing schemes and projects that have a direct implication and relevance to the farmers / entrepreneurs dealing with milk and milk products.
