The Department of Agronomy was started in 1940 and is one of the oldest departments in Madras Veterinary College. The mandate of this department is to teach the basic principles on soil, water, plant and climate and their interaction with rising of crops with specific emphasis on fodder crops. The courses offered were `Principles of Agronomy and Fodder Crop Production' and `Mixed Farming and Farming Systems Management' and 'Fodder production and grassland management' to the U.G. students of Veterinary College. Currently as per the Veterinary Council of India the department is offering the course on 'Fodder production and conservation' as unit of LPM to the first professional year students.
All India pattern of syllabus prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India (2018) course on LPM Unit II Fodder production and conservation is now being offered by the Department of Agronomy for the first professional year students. To facilitate conduct of practical classes and also to fulfil the mandatory requirement of the VCI syllabus, a Fodder Crops Cafeteria has been developed under the ICAR Development Grant in the college campus in which different categories of fodder crops were raised in small plots for demonstration purpose to the U.G. students.
