KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA, NAMAKKAL


GENESIS

ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Namakkal is a peripheral unit of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai with funding of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi functioning since 13.10.2004. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Namakkal, is a centre for transfer of technologies from lab to various groups like Farming Community, Self Help Groups, Rural Youths, Extension Personnel etc., through organizing various events like Trainings, On Farm Testing, Front Line Demonstrations and Advisory services regularly. To impart the scientific skills and knowledge among the farm women, farmers & physically challenged people and to adopt the scientific technologies in their farms, KVK has conducted various training programmes, awareness campaigns, exhibitions, demonstrations, field days and camps during the period in the following the subjects as follows

Technology assessment and demonstration for its application and capacity development.

  • On-farm testing to assess the location specificity of agricultural technologies under various farming systems
  • Frontline demonstrations to establish production potential of technologies on the farmers’ fields
  • Organized need based training to farmers and extension personnel
  • Work as Knowledge and Resource Centre of agricultural technologies for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector in improving the agricultural economy of the district
  • Provide farm advisories using ICT and other media means on varied subjects of interest to farmers
  • Organize frontline extension activities, identify and document selected farm innovations and converge with ongoing schemes and programs within the mandate of KVK

DIVISION OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

Animal husbandry section has strong intention to popularise innovative cost effective technologies for livestock farmers of Namakkal district, promoting integrated farming system and encouraging value addition of livestock farm produce.

Specialized KVK for Small Holder livestock and Poultry farming

KVK Namakkal was selected as Specialized KVK for Small Holder livestock and Poultry farming by ICAR and allotted with the budget outlay of 15 lakhs and under this, one fish cum duck pond as integrated farming was created in the KVK premises, one bore well was digged for water recharge and diagnostic lab yet to be constructed (7.5 lakhs) and purchased farm and lab equipment (7.5 lakhs) to exhibit innovative technologies in livestock farming and farm mechanisation to equip small holder farmer in the current era.

Village Adoption Programme

Under Village adoption programme, Anniyapuram and Peramandampalayam villages were selected and activities being carried out for interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach for holistic development of the villages, Special activities in Tribal sub plan at Kollihills.

DIVISION OF AGRONOMY

Agronomy division deals with crop production technologies for Paddy, Sorghum, Maize, Minor millets, Pulses, Oilseeds and fodder crops, integrated farming system, organic agriculture, organic manures and certification etc to the farming community

  • Seed production programmes are organised in the farmers field for fodder varieties and make it available to the farmers and institution in Tamil Nadu and other states through Public Private Partnership mode (PPP Mode)
  • Cluster front line demonstration under National food security mission for achieving higher productivity in pulses and oilseeds to obtain higher farm income
  • Implementation of Technology Demonstration Components (TDC) for drought tolerant and short duration varieties in groundnut and pulses & Insitu moisture conservation practices and integrated farming system models in NICRA scheme at Vadavathur & Jambumadai village funded by CRIDA, Hyderabad
  • Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode developed for paddy seeds, groundnut and pulses seeds procured from the farmers and distributed to the other needy farmers
  • Special activities in Tribal sub plan at Kollihills

DIVISION OF HORTICULTURE

Horticulture division deals with crop production technologies for Fruits ,Vegetables, Plantation crops, Ornamental & Flower crops, Spices & Condiments, Medicinal and aromatic plants, Integrated farming system, organic horticulture and certification etc to the farming community.

Need based training programmes conducted

  • Integrated crop management practices (ICM) for fruits viz., Banana, Mango, Guava, Pomegranate, Sapota, Acid lime, Jack, Jamun, Papaya and Pine apple
  • ICM practices in Vegetables viz., Small onion, Tapioca, Chillies, Tomato, Brinjal, Bellary onion, Radhish, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Beetroot, Carrot, Annual moringa, Curry leaf and Amaranthus
  • ICM practices in Spices & condiments viz., Turmeric, Pepper, Clove, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Coriander and Mint
  • ICM practices in flower crops viz., Rose,Jasmine,Tuberose,Neerium,Marigold, Chrysanthemum and Ixora

DIVISION OF AGRICULTURAL ENTOMOLOGY

Entomology division deals with plant protection technologies for Paddy, Sorghum, Maize, Minor millets, Pulses, Oilseeds and fodder crops, apiculture, sericulture, organic pest management and storage pests management, mushrooms, etc., to the farming community.

Fisheries division deals with production technologies for Poly culture of carps, Milk fish and Litopenaeus vannamei. Popularization of backyard ornamental fish culture, cage culture, Integrated Farming System model for garden lands.
