This department was originally established as Food and Industrial Microbiology during the year 2015 and later it was renamed as Department of Food Microbiology and Industrial Biotechnology in the year 2016. Based on the recommendations of ICAR Fifth Deans Committee, the department was rechristened and functioning currently as Department of Food Safety and Quality Assurance from the year 2018.
The department imparts professional education and facilitate quality research to create skilled manpower in the area of Food Safety and Quality Assurance and organizes experiential learning training programmes on innovative technologies with a view to ensure food safety and security for the society.
The facilities and expertise available in this department is being extended to other organization of higher learning. The lab is equipped with scientific equipment to screen the dairy and other food product samples for assessment of its quality in terms of nutritional and storage stability. Food Chemists and Food Microbiologists would critically analyse the samples for its proximate composition and microbial load.
As per the recommendations of the V Deans Committee of ICAR, New Delhi the Department is currently offering the courses for B.Tech. (Food Technology), B.Tech. (Dairy Technology), M.Tech (Food Technology), M.Tech. (Dairy Technology). M.Tech. (Dairy chemistry) and Ph.D. (Food Technology) programmes. The department is engaged in under graduate and post graduate education programme formulated by ICAR, New Delhi. The objective of the Department is to specifically deal with the food safety and quality assurance of food products from animal origin viz. milk, meat, eggs and fish as well as plant origin such as fruit and vegetable products.

The department is providing facility for testing of food samples submitted by the stakeholders, students and industry. Awareness programmes are organised in terms of food safety and quality to the consumers and other industry personnel. Organizing capacity building programme to members of the Line Department, faculty and students to update the latest knowledge and technology in food safety and quality.
