DEPARTMENT OF FOOD PROCESS ENGINEERING


The Department of Food Process Engineering has been established in the year 2014. The mandate of the department is to offer undergraduate, post graduate courses and Ph.D. courses in B.Tech (Food Technology), B.Tech. (Dairy Technology), M.Tech. (Food Technology), M.Tech. (Dairy Technology). M.Tech. (Dairy chemistry) and Ph.D. (Food Technology) to undertake field oriented research and to provide active technical support for the implementation of Government schemes on various food and dairy process Engineering.

Objectives

Education:

To offer undergraduate and post graduate courses in Food Process Engineering, Electrical and Electronic engineering.

Research:

To undertake research in the thrust areas of Food Process Engineering.

Extension:

To disseminate Food Processing Equipment and Technologies invented for benefit of farming community and industry.


Education

The Department is currently offering Basic and Food Process Engineering related courses for B.Tech. (Food Technology), B.Tech. (Dairy Technology), M.Tech (Food Technology), M.Tech. (Dairy Technology). M.Tech. (Dairy chemistry) and Ph.D. (Food Technology) programmes.

Research

The Department has a vision and mission to promote and strengthen research activities on the basis of identified thrust areas to achieve short term goals and long term goals as follows:

Thrust areas of research

  • Design and development of various non thermal processing Equipments
  • Novel food packaging Technologies to enhance shelf life of food products
  • Green energy technologies for processing and storage of food products

Vision

The department of Food Process Engineering has the vision to become an excellent department in food process engineering at global level in the field of food processing.

Mission

  • To start master and doctoral degree programs in the field of food process engineering to produce competent graduates to work in multi - national companies.
  • Hold researches contributing to the development of Food Engineering with excellence in the field of Engineering, which can be applied to the community and food industry.
  • Hold community service activities to provide solutions to problems and challenges to the farming community.

  • To produce competent and globally competitive graduates at under graduate level.
  • To carry out applied research in the field of food engineering with excellence.

Long term goals

To achieve its vision and carry out the missions, the department has the following long term goals:

  • To apply food process engineering solutions through community service activities in providing solutions to problems and challenges in society.
  • To develop gadgets in the field of food and Dairy process engineering and disseminate the technologies to the farmers, entrepreneurs and industrial sectors.

Facilities

The Under Graduate and Post Graduate research laboratories of the department are well-equipped with both basic and advanced equipments for carrying out various experiment and engineering operations. These include Precision weighing balances, packaging machineries, package testing machines, viscometer, mini retort, pH meter, workshop, welding machines, drilling machines, lathe light duty machine, shaping, grinding machine, refractometers, heat exchangers, grain moisture meter, U Tube mercury Manometer, Anemometer, Venturi mete and Pulsed electric field apparatus

Extension

  • Consultation services for various problems identified by farmers and industrial person in food processing areas.
  • Conduct of specialized training programmes for the beneficiaries of farmers, various government schemes and industries.
  • Transfer of technologies from lab to field.
  • Publication of popular articles, books, booklets, training manuals, pamphlets for the benefit of farmers.
  • To disseminate low cost engineering and processing technologies involved in value addition of milk to farmers, self help groups, entrepreneurs and uneducated people with a view to create awareness on the business scope in milk and milk products processing by conducting training programmes on Value addition of milk, Fabrication of minor food processing systems and Maintenance and Servicing of Automatic milk collection system.

Salient Achievements

  • The Low Cost Engineering and Processing Technologies for Value Addition of Milk under the scheme Unnat Bharat Abhiyan enabled farming community to acquire knowledge and skill in processing value added milk products viz., khoa, kulfi, ghee, ice cream, flavoured milk, carrot milk, yoghurt, butter milk.
  • Unemployed youth and farmers were trained on the technical knowledge of the latest technologies involved fabrication of minor food processing systems.
  • Training on “Maintenance and servicing of automated milk collection station” benefitted people from three adjacent districts of Chennai (Thiruvallur, Vellore and Kanchipuram).
  • Techno Business incubatees of CFDT used the automatic milk collection station for fixing the price of the raw milk collected from farms.
  • Experiential learning students of CFDT and polytechnic students were given training on fabrication of minor food processing systems
  • Faculty Development Programme on “ Technology Disseminate on the Design and Development of Functional Food Products” for two weeks with 40 participants (academicians and Industrialists)
  • ATAL – Faculty Development Programme on “Building Sustainable and Resilient Food Security and Food Processing Systems”
  • Two days National Conference cum Workshop on “Zero hunger zero hunger Challenge: Strategies for Food Security” were conducted on 13.12.2018 and 14.12.2018
  • National Webinar Series-2020 on “Recent Advances in Dairy Process Engineering” conducted on 24.08.2020 to 28.08.2020 to provide opportunity to learn recent advances in Dairy Process Engineering and gain knowledge on automation techniques in Food and Dairy sectors
