DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PATHOLOGY


The Department of Veterinary Pathology was established at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu on 20-06-2012 as per USO. No. 20264/A1/ 2012 and Rc. No. 1832/A1/2012 dated. 20-06-2012 of the Registrar, TANUVAS, Chennai-51.


OBJECTIVES

  • To impart quality education for undergraduate students of B.V.Sc & A.H. and postgraduate (MVSc) students
  • To execute quality research for postgraduate students.
  • To help the farmers in controlling disease outbreaks by doing necropsy, cytology and histopathology.
  • To conduct postmortem examination on Livestock, Poultry and fishes for academic and diagnostic purposes.
  • To screen the clinical samples and histopathological sections to aid in confirmation of diseases.
  • To work continuously on infectious diseases, toxicopathology and neoplasms of various farm and pet animals.

EDUCATION

As per the VCI semester pattern (MSVE-2016) and ICAR pattern courses are being offered for both UG and PG students. Facilities such as UG laboratory, PG Research laboratory and Museum are available for imparting the education.

Laboratory Facilities

  • Necropsy facility: Conducting postmortem examination on large and small ruminants, horse, pig, dog, poultry, wild and pet birds and wild animals.
  • Histotechnology: Tissue samples collected from necropsy and samples received from field veterinarians, Animal Disease Diagnostic Units and other units of Animal husbandry department of Tamil Nadu are processed for disease diagnosis.
  • Histopathology: Processed tissues sections are examined for disease diagnosis, UG /PG education and research
  • Clinical Pathology: Various clinical samples received from VCC, VCRI, Orathanadu and from farmers and field veterinarians are analysed for disease diagnosis.
  • Rabies diagnostic unit: Facilities are available for diagnosis of rabies by cytological staining method from the samples received while conducting necropsy and from various units of Animal Husbandry Department of Tamil Nadu
  • Museum: Formalin preserved gross specimens are racked systematically for UG/PG education.
  • Photomicrography unit: Used for UG/PG education and research.

RESEARCH

  • The department provides laboratory facilities and guidance to research scholars.
  • We provide histopathological slide reading and tissue morphometry on animal tissues brought by PG scholars of various departments of VCRI, OND and nearby government research institutes and field Veterinary Assistant Surgeons.

Extension

  • Farmers who brought the carcass for necropsy are advised regarding the treatment, control prevention and quarantine protocols to be followed during disease outbreaks in collaboration with other departments if needed.
  • Faculties are involved in training programmes conducted for farmers and Veterinary Assistant Surgeons / para-veterinarian of Department of Animal Husbandry Tamil Nadu.
  • Involved in conducting training programmes for field Veterinarians of Department of Animal Husbandry on Necropsy diagnosis of livestock diseases and webinars for veterinary teaching/research facilities, research scholars and students.
