Teaching of the subject of Statistics to the undergraduate (BVSc) students of Madras Veterinary College was started in the year 1959-60 utilizing the services of Statisticians available in the Directorate of Animal Husbandry on part time basis. A separate Department - Department of Animal Husbandry Statistics - for teaching Statistics to UG and PG students was started in the year 1966.
The Department was re-designated as the Department of Animal Husbandry Statistics and Computer Applications in 2000 by merging the University Computer Centre to this Department and empowering it to manage computer networking of the college. The major activities of this Department are teaching animal husbandry statistics to undergraduate and postgraduate students, offering guidance to research students and staff in designing of experiments, processing of data and interpretation of experimental results and also managing the computer network of the university and the college.
The Department offers a course on Bio-Statistics and Computer Applications (2+1) to the UG students under VCI pattern. Although there is no PG programme currently, this Department offers three PG courses (Applied Statistics, Computer Applications and Research Methodology, all of which are compulsory courses), besides two courses to the PG students of Animal Husbandry Economics.
