The Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Nagercoil was started on 18-05-1981 and is functioning at 4-114, Parakkai - 629 601, Kanyakumari District.
- To impart training on the felt need of the end users, practicing farmers and officers of the line department.
- To act as a two way channel between University and the farmers, to identify the field based livestock and poultry problems and also to pass on the remedial measures.
- To conduct on farm trials on the latest research findings of the University and field oriented problems specific to the area.
- To ensure an immediate and thorough diagnosis of disease in the event of an outbreak with special emphasis on disease reporting system.
- To motivate and encourage in establishing livestock and poultry farms for self employment by the local farmers.
- To collaborate with state and central sponsored rural development programmes.
- To develop and maintain data base on livestock / poultry in the area.
- To carryout short term need based location specific projects.
- To work for the upliftment of the SC/ST livestock farmers of this region
- Advisory services on management, health coverage for profitable livestock and poultry farming.
- Conducting on campus and off campus training
programmes on Animal Husbandry practices viz., Dairy, Goat, Piggery,
Poultry, Rabbit, Japanese, Quail, Turkey farming, Agro-forestry, Milk
and milk products for the benefit of farmers, unemployed graduates,
physically handicapped, self-employment beneficiaries of District
Industries centre, Women members of self help groups, TANWA etc. and
motivating them to venture into livestock farming.
- Preparation of economically feasible project
reports to enable them to avail bank finance. Educating the farmers by
giving radio talks over A.I.R. and popular articles through press,
magazines and pamphlets.
- Participation in mass contact, Animal health camp and infertility camps.
- Model fodder plot has been created in the campus
and fodder slips are being sold to farmers to enable them to develop
fodder plots in their own land.

A research sub-project on study on sub clinical mastitis in Kanyakumari district is in operation from 01-07-2003 onwards for a period of one year.
- A Regional seminar on poultry production,
infertility in cattle, Rhinosporidiosis in animals and man was conducted
on 02-03-1989 at Nagercoil.
- A Seminar on Leptospirosis was conducted at Nagercoil on 26-10-1990.
- A National seminar in Rhinosporidiosis was conducted at Nagercoil on 25-12-1990 involving medical and veterinary surgeons.
- A seminar on Leptospirosis was conducted at Nagercoil on 31-08-1999 involving medical professionals and veterinarians.
Salient Research Findings
- A high incidence of Rhinosporidiosis in
Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu is reported. Among the four taluks,
highest occurrence was found in Agasteeswaram Taluk (51.2%) followed by
Kalkulam (24.4%), Thovalai (22%) and Vilavancode (2.4%). Young
adolescents were found to be more susceptible.
- An invitro study revealed that among various
various antibiotics used for bacterial diseases of poultry, Neomycin was
found to be sensitive to maximum number of cases and there by proved
its efficiency in controlling bacterial diseases of poultry.
- Clinical signs of posterior paralysis was noticed
among growing pigs between 6 to 8 months of age in two piggery units.
When vitamin A supplements was given (cord liver oil) at the dose of 500
I.U per kg body weight per day for one month and thereafter to continue
maintenance dose, the affected pigs recovered well and no further
- Out of the 500 sera samples collected from sheep
and goat during 2000, 55 samples (11%) were positive for the presence of
antibodies against Blue Tongue virus.
- Among helminthic diseases in livestock in Kanyakumari district Amphistomiasis was higher.
- The calcium and phosphorous levels in the blood
serum of cross bred repeat breeding dairy cows in different areas of
Kanyakumari district were assessed. No significant change in the level
of calcium were observed, whereas a significant reduction in the level
of phosphorus was noticed among repeat breeders.
- Serum sample from 197 sheep and 479 goats were
collected between April 1998 and March 2002 from different parts of
Kanyakumari district. Positive titres of leptospiral antibodies were
noticed in 6.6% of sheep sera samples and 7.3% goat sera samples.
