VETERINARY UNIVERSITY TRAINING AND RESEARCH CENTRE, MELMARUVATHUR

History and Mandate

The Duck Research and Development center at Krishi Vigan Kendra, Kattupakkam was redesignated as Veterinary University Training and Research Centre and shifted to Melmaruvathur which started functioning from 17.11 2003. This centre offers services to transfer viable technologies from the laboratory to the farming community and strives to suggest solutions to the location specific problems.

Major Activities

  • Training the beneficiaries of Tamilnadu Honourable Chief Minister's scheme on Priceless distribution of Milch cows, sheep and goat
  • Attending the Tamil Nadu Government Uzhavar Peruvizha celebrations and kalnadai Vaara Vizha along with line Department of Agriculture and Animal husbandry
  • Advisory services as in-person, through Telephone, Email, SMS, Touch Kiosk screen and posts for management, Health Coverage & Profitable Livestock and Poultry Farming
  • Conducting On Campus and Off Campus training programs & Awareness programs on Animal Husbandry practices viz., Dairy, Goat, Piggery, Poultry, Rabbit, Japanese, Quail, Turkey farming, Agro-forestry, Milk and milk products for the benefit of farmers, unemployed graduates, physically handicapped, self-employment beneficiaries of District Industries centre, Women members of self help groups, TANWA etc. and motivating them to venture into livestock farming
  • Disease outbreaks investigations and examining clinical materials for proper diagnosis
  • Appraising farmers on the latest technologies for profitable livestock farming through exhibition and video films during mass conduct programs, infertility camps and farmers meet
  • Suggesting low cost feed formulations and feeding pattern during drought seasons and preparing pamphlets on Animal husbandry and distributing the same to the rural farming community are the other activities
  • Farm visit for establishment and disease investigations
  • Conduct of Post Mortem during mortality
  • Sending farm radio bulletins to All India Radio, sending Popular articles in magazines, Guest lectures, Daily Newspaper messages etc for farming community welfare
  • Documentation of Success stories & encouraging farmers to subscribe Kalnadai Kathir
  • Village adoption for empowerment of rural women through transfer of technology

Future Programmes

  • Regular training to the farmers, women of SHGs, unemployed youth and entrepreneurs in scientific management of livestock farms and livestock based enterprises
  • Screening for Tuberculosis, brucellosis and parasitic infestation in farm animals
  • Disease investigation in Poultry, Cattle,sheep ,goat,pigs and Rabbit units
  • Studies to assess the feasibility for technology transfer
  • Creating awareness among students about the Animal husbandry and Veterinary science practices by means of conducting guest lectures, exhibitions and training programs
  • Skill development and self employment courses will be offered regularly
  • Artificial Insemination Training will be offered to the field farmers

TNLDA NPBB farmers orientation workshop :

  • VUTRC, Melmaruvathur conducted a one day TAMILNADU LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT AGENCY (Under National Programme for Bovine Breeding/ Rashtriya Gokul Mission) (TNLDA NPBB) farmers orientation workshop on “Feeding strategies for better reproductive efficiency in Dairy cattle “at Pooriyampakkam village on 10.08.2017. Totally 250 dairy farmers from NGO organizations including beneficiaries from Aavin were participated and most of them were women.
  • A one day TNLDA NPBB farmers orientation workshop on “A calf a year- Technology interventions in reproductive management of Dairy cattle “was conducted at Orathy village on 26.10.2017. Totally 250 dairy farmers from NGO organizations including beneficiaries from Aavin were participated.
  • A one day TNLDA,NPBB, Phase-I farmers orientation workshop on “Scientific Management of Bovines breeding through Technological backstopping” was conducted at Cheyyur on 30.05.2018. Totally 250 dairy farmers from NGO organizations including beneficiaries from Aavin were participated.
  • A one day TNLDA NPBB farmer’s orientation workshop on “Reproductive Management Of Dairy Cattle For Profitable Dairying” was conducted at Thirukkazhunkundram on 01.09.2018. Totally 250 dairy farmers from NGO organizations including beneficiaries from Aavin were participated.

CPDO Training :

Melmaruvathur, Veterinary University Training and Research Centre Central Poultry development Organization and Poultry Development Organization, Hesserghatta, Bangalore combinedly has conducted six days training programme on “Poultry Entrepreneurs training programme at VUTRC, Melmaruvathur from 04.12.217 to 09.12.2017.

ATMA - Farm School

The farm school programme on “Adoption of scientific techniques in dairy farming” was conducted by VUTRC, Melmaruvathur for 25 beneficiaries on 09.05.2018, 07.06.2018, 13.07.2018, 13.08.2018, 07.09.2018 and 15.11.2018 for disseminating the knowledge on Profitable dairy farming to the farmers. Total budget is Rs.29,400 /=.

FARM RADIO SCHOOL is in progress in co-ordination with ALL INDIA RADIO-CHENNAI on Velladu valarpil Ariviyal Thozhilnutpangal from 23.04.2019 to 16.07.2019 comprising of 13 lectures will be delivered by faculties of TANUVAS.
