RESEARCH

This institute as an entity strives to pay attention on fundamental and strategic research pertaining to health, production and welfare of animals, along with the related public and environmental health aspects. This institute has obtained competitive research projects funded by ICAR, NADP, DST, DBT, DSIR, TNSCST, World Bank, etc.; sponsored research projects from various funding agencies based on facilities of this institute; and foreign collaborative projects. Validation of drugs, additives etc. for private firms on research projects basis are being carried out. Students’ projects and sub projects were undertaken to motivate students and staff. Various schemes are functioning in this college which strengthens the research activities. The sponsored research projects have strengthened the infrastructure facilities of this institute.

Research Outcome

Patents Obtained

  • Patent obtained on 2021 for Bio diesel production from rendered chicken oil (Patent no: 371344 dated : 07.07.2021 Issued by : Government of India)
  • Biodiesel production from rendered chicken oil offers new scope as a potential means to stimulate rural development, lower emission of harmful pollutants and decrease greenhouse gas emission

Technology Innovated

  • Entrepreneurship model on “Combined Cream separator cum butter churn” innovated in 2019. It has been utilized for butter production at dairy plant, teaching and research in UG and PG education and entrepreneurship training programme
  • Disposal and utilization of dead birds by aerobic composting was innovated in which dead birds, broiler slaughter house waste could be composted with locally available agricultural waste materials like coconut coir pit waste, straw or sugarcane top at 20: 1 carbon nitrogen ration with a period of 40 to 60 days.

Technology Documented

  • Ethno veterinary practice for warts in cattle was documented during 2020 for household treatment of warts in cattle
  • Hind quarter elevator technology has been developed for attending obstetrical cases with ease.

Salient Research Achievements

  • Developed the technology for the preparation of flavoured milk and ice cream using carrot juice and cardamom as natural colouring and flavouring agents
  • Technology to detect adulteration of fish meal, leather meal and deoiled rice bran has been validated. In addition, user friendly excel based software package for formulation of ration for dairy cattle and biological indicators to assess the nutritional status of dairy cows under field conditions have been developed
  • Oestrus induction and synchronization in dairy animals using progesterone impregnated vaginal sponges
  • Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, the causative agent of respiratory disease in poultry was isolated for the first time in India in the year 2005
  • Avian metapneumovirus, the causative agent of “Swollen Head Syndrome” in chicken was reported for the first time in India in the year 2014
  • Poultry hybrids (Namakkal Chicken, Namakkal quail, Namakkal gold quail) were developed to meet the conditions of local farmers
  • Molecular sexing of monomorphic and dimorphic birds is of great significance where sexing by phenotypic characteristics have turned out to be a difficult option
  • The Gulabajamoon mix preparation technology developed by the Department of Livestock Products Technology - Dairy Science was transferred to Erode District Milk Producers Co-operative Union Ltd. on 29.11.2018 for mass production and marketing
  • Autogenous vaccines for contagious ecthymia (Orf) and Bovine papilloma are being produced as and when need arise
  • Hind quarter elevator technology has been developed for large animal obstetrical practice

  • Dr. Gbolabo Olaitan Onasanya, Senior Lecturer Animal Biotechnology and Genomics, Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria is undergoing Post-doctoral research (TWAS- DBT) programme on “mRNA expression profile of HSPs 70 and 90 genes and related-Cytokines of African Zebu cattle raised under assault of thermal condition” under guidance of Dr.A.K.Thiruvenkadan, Professor, Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding.
