DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY SURGERY AND RADIOLOGY

Objectives

  • To impart Undergraduate education to the students in the discipline of Veterinary surgery and Radiology
  • To provide surgical treatment to sick animals and to train Undergraduates in the management of clinical cases
  • To offer guidance to research students
  • To provide information to the animal owners in prevention and management of sick animals by way of extension activities
  • To function as a referral unit for neighbouring districts of Thanjavur.

Units

The following units function under the department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology.

  • Large Animal Operation Theatre and Small ruminant operation theatre: Large animal operation theatre is equipped with over head rail movement system with hoist, hydraulic operated OT table, transport trolley, rumenotomy Travis for standing surgery and basic instruments for soft tissue surgeries, udder and teat surgeries, orthopaedic surgeries and hoof related conditions
  • Equine Surgical Unit: Equine surgical unit is equipped with over head rail movement system with hoist, hydraulic operated OT table, transport trolley, specialised equine Travis with foam padded for standing surgery and basic instruments for soft tissue surgeries, orthopaedic surgeries and hoof related conditions
  • Small Animal General Surgery Operation Theatre: Small animal operation theatre equipped with inhalation anaesthetic workstation, hydraulic operated OT table, shadow less OT LED light, multi gas with vital sign monitor, thermo cautery, suction apparatus, ultra-violet sterilization facilities and basic instruments for soft tissue and orthopaedic surgeries
  • Small Animal Ophthalmology/Orthopaedic Theatre: Ophthalmology unit equipped with ophthalmic operating microscope, basic ophthalmic instruments, cataract surgical unit, IOL set, Ophthalmoscope. Orthopaedic surgical unit is equipped with instrumentation for bone and joint surgery, spinal surgery and corrective surgeries
  • X-ray and Computerised Radiography unit: Radiology unit equipped with 320mA High Frequency X-ray machine with Computerised Radiography System to take X-rays for both large and small animals. Facilitites for taking GI contrast studies, urological and myelographic studies.
  • Physiotherapy Unit: Physiotherapy unit has been equipped with LASER, Ultrasonic stimulator, Short wave diathermy, Interferential therapy, Infra-red therapy and Electrotherapy facilities for the rehabilitation of neuromuscular aliments in large and small animals
  • Dental/Oro-maxillary Surgery Unit: Dental and oro- maxillary unit is equipped with ultrasonic dental scaler with inbuilt compressor and aerator for polishing and basic dental instruments for small animals and large animals
