DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH AND EPIDEMIOLOGY

The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology was created as a constituent of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, Thanjavur District during the year 2012 with an aim to offer Under Graduate courses in B.V.Sc. and A.H.

Objectives

  • To impart education for B.V.Sc.&A.H. students on Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology
  • To undertake studies on environmental hazard and food safety, and their impacts
  • To assess antimicrobial resistance in animals and their by-products
  • To study the prevalence of zoonotic diseases of regional importance and creating awareness among public
  • To undertake epidemiological investigation on animal diseases

Undergraduate course offered as per VCI Regulation

  • VPE 311: Milk and Milk Hygiene, Food Safety and Public Health (2+1)
  • VPE 321: Veterinary Epidemiology and Zoonoses (2+1)
  • VPE 511: Environment and Environmental Hygiene (2+1)

Laboratory Facilities available

  • Assessment of microbial quality of milk, meat, egg, milk products, meat products and environmental samples.
  • Assessment of water quality viz. physical, metallic and non metallic impurities and microbial quality.
  • Molecular detection of zoonotic pathogens.

Extension

  • “NABARD Sponspored CAT Programme on Strengthening the livelihood of rural dairy farmer with hygienic and food safety measures desirable in marketing grounds” was conducted at VCRI, Orathanadu for the dairy farmers of Thanjavur district from 07.05.2018 to 09.05.2018.
  • “Animal Health Camp and Awareness Programme” was conducted by Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu on 03.05.2018 at Kannathangudi Melaiyur village, Orathanadu taluk, Thanjavur district in the event of “World Veterinary Day – 2018.
  • “Anti-rabies vaccination programme” was conducted at Thanjavur on 25.03.2018 jointly with SPCA, Thanjavur.
  • “Awareness programme on World Tuberculosis Day” was conducted at Neduvakottai village, Orathanadu taluk, Thanjavur district on 24.03.2018 along with NSS unit of VCRI, Orathanadu.
  • “Awareness programme on zoonotic diseases” was conducted at RV Nagar, Orathanadu on 14.09.2017 in the event of Swachhta Pakhwada 2017.
  • “Anti-rabies Vaccination and Sanitation cum Personal Hygiene Awareness Programme” was conducted at Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) campus, Thanjavur on 25.06.2016 jointly with SPCA, Thanjavur.
  • “Anti-rabies vaccination and personal Hygiene Awareness camp” was organised at TVCC, VCRI, Orathanadu on 05.07.2016 to commemorate “World Zoonosis Day 2016” jointly with NSS unit of VCRI, Orathanadu.
  • “Anti-rabies Vaccination and Awareness Camp” was conducted on 11.10.2015 at Tamil Nadu Government Exhibition Centre, Thanjavur to commemorate “World Rabies Day 2015” (September 28).
  • “Anti-rabies vaccination and awareness camp” was conducted at Kannathangudi Melaiyur village, Orathanadu taluk, Thanjavur district on 26.08.2015.
