• To offer Animal Genetics and Breeding courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• To formulate and carryout research with financial assistance from the University / External funding agencies.

Laboratory Facilities

• Computer Laboratory is equipped with 27 computers as well as audio-visual aids for U.G. teaching.
• Undergraduate Laboratory is equipped with teaching aids and infrastructure facilities to use microscopes for U.G. teaching.

Research

• Self Financing Scheme on "Establishing Elite Murrah Buffalo Bull Mother Unit at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu" is functioning in this department.

Ongoing projects

Extension

• This department actively involves in popularization of indigenous breeds of livestock and poultry to the farmers through events like exhibitions, camps, radio and television programmes, etc.
• This department has prepared breed charts, pamphlets on livestock and poultry and it has been displayed and distributed to the farmers
• This department render the consultancy services to government farms on conservation and breeding of indigenous livestock
