DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT


The Department of Livestock Production Management was established at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Udumalpet in the year 2021 with the objective to offer quality education to B.V.Sc. & A.H. undergraduate students.

Objectives

  • To impart value added UG education for immediate and long-term application and utility.
  • To prioritize strategies and develop skills to overcome challenges in livestock farming.
  • To make an objective analysis of contemporary issues in livestock production management.
  • To support students for implementation of applied research projects.
  • To offer an effective, outreach-enhanced animal husbandry service.


Under-Graduate Education

As per the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education - 2016 regulations prescribed by Veterinary Council of India, the following courses are offered to the undergraduate students:

I Professional Year – B.V.Sc. & A.H.

Livestock Production Management (Paper I and II) - 4+2 credit hours
Unit I General Livestock Management.
Unit II Fodder Production and Conservation.
Unit III Livestock Production Management - Ruminants
Unit IV Zoo Animals Production Management.
Unit V Animal Welfare.
Unit VI Poultry Production Management
Unit VII Diversified Poultry Production and Hatchery Management
Unit VIII Laboratory or Rabbit or Pet Animal Production Management
Unit IX Swine or Equine or Camel, Yak and Mithun Production Management.
  • Credit based annual examination pattern will be carried out for Papers I and II
  • Paper I : Unit -1,2,3,4 & 5
  • Paper II : Unit -6,7,8 & 9

UG Laboratory and Museum

  • Undergraduate Laboratory is equipped with teaching aids (Charts of different breeds of livestock) and Zootechny equipment.
  • The museum consists of different housing models for cattle, sheep, goat, swine and environmentally controlled poultry house.
  • Judging pavilion is available to teach the restraining of animals for undergraduate students

The Department is having well established infrastructure facilities in Livestock Production Management to cater to the needs of the Students, Farmers and Researchers.

Department activities

  • Imparting education to under graduate students as per MSVE 2016, VCI regulations.
  • Arrangement of exposure visits for students to various livestock farms, zoological parks and hatcheries.
  • Awareness programme to farmers on livestock farming practices.

Thrust areas of research

  • Mitigation and adaptation strategies for climate change.
  • Sustainable livestock faming including organic farming and farm waste management.
  • Digital tools for technology dissemination for farmers.
