Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding

The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding was established during 2021 to offer Under-Graduate course (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) as per G.O(Ms.) No.96 dated 18.08.2020 Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries (AH6) Department, Chennai to offer Undergraduate courses as well as carrying out basic and applied research in the field of Animal Genetics and Breeding.

Objectives

To offer undergraduate courses in Animal Genetics and Breeding.
To undertake research on breeding for elite germplasm production and breed improvement / conservation programmes.
To disseminate the scientific breeding methods and modern technologies for the benefit of livestock keepers.

Education

As per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016), a course on Animal Genetics and Breeding (3+1), which is comprised of three units and will be taken during the Second Professional Year of B.V.Sc. & A.H.

Unit – 1 : Biostatistics and Computer Applications
Unit – 2 : Principles of Animal and Population Genetics
Unit – 3 : Principles of Animal Breeding

Credit based annual examination pattern will be carried out for Papers I and II.

Paper I: Unit -1 & Unit -2
Paper II: Unit -3

UG Laboratory

Computer Laboratory is equipped with 20 computers with internet facility as well as audio-visual aids for U.G. teaching.
Undergraduate Laboratory is equipped with teaching aids and infrastructure to use microscopes / phase contrast microscopes for U.G. teaching.

Department activities

Imparting education to under graduate students as per VCI regulations.
To Identify well-organized indigenous cattle / poultry farms by private entrepreneurs in Tiruppur and neighboring districts.
To arrange exposure visits for students to Private Livestock Breeding Farms, Livestock Shandies and various Research Stations of TANUVAS.
