DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH AND EPIDEMIOLOGY


The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology was started in the year 2012 with an aim to enlighten the under graduate and post graduate veterinary science students on Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology to protect animals, human and environment as one health.


Objectives

Education:

To impart education in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology to Undergraduate / Post graduate and Doctoral degree students.

Research:

To carry out need based surveillance, forecasting of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases to safeguard human

Extension:

Dissemination of information on zoonotic diseases prevention and control, food safety and environmental protection to general public, farmers and pet owners.

Education

The Department is currently offering course on Veterinary Public health and Epidemiology as per MSVE - 2016 syllabus to the under graduate students which imparts knowledge on Milk and Meat Hygiene, Food Safety, Epidemiology, Zoonoses, Environment and Environmental hygiene. The department is also offering Post Graduate and Doctoral courses in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology.

Research

Facilities

The department is equipped with four laboratories including Zoonoses, Milk hygiene, Meat hygiene and Molecular epidemiology to give hands on training on cutting edge technologies to ensure food safety, zoonotic disease diagnosis and epidemiological techniques. The department laboratories are well equipped with cooling centrifuge, PCR thermal cycler, Real – time PCR equipment, class III biosafety cabinet, class II biosafety cabinets (A2 and B2), laminar flow, sonicator, all in one microscope with documentation facilities, BOD incubator, Carbon-di-oxide incubator, tri-gas incubator, ELISA reader and washer, gel documentation system, autoclave and deep freezers.

Extension

The Department is involved in various extension programmes on creating awareness on zoonotic diseases, Milk and Meat hygiene by organizing/participating in Camps, Exhibitions and Radio and TV programmes for the benefit of general public, farmers and pet owners.

  • Carried out prevalence studies on Brucellosis and Coxiellosis in Tirunelveli and Southern districts of Tamil Nadu respectively
