VETERINARY COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE, TIRUNELVELI

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY

The Department of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry was established in June, 2012 and has been offering undergraduate courses since then. To its credit, the department is well equipped to cater the needs of UG education as per Veterinary Council of India (VCI) regulations. Apart from undergraduate teaching, the department is involved in the research and extension activities.

Objectives

Education:

To offer the education in Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry to Undergraduate, Post graduate and Doctoral degree students.

Researach:

To undertake the Physiology and Biochemistry related research projects on livestock for enhancing production potential.

Extension:

To provide the fundamental knowledge on hormone based products for augmenting reproductive potential to farming community.

Education

As per the MSVE, 2016, the Department is currently offering the course in Veterinary Physiology which includes blood, cardiovascular system, neuromuscular system, digestive system, respiratory system, excretory system, endocrinology, reproduction, growth and environmental physiology. In Veterinary Biochemistry, carbohydrates, Protein, lipids and nucleic acids, metabolism and clinical biochemistry are taught to the students.

  • I Professional Year: Veterinary Physiology (Paper I and II) – 4 +1 credit hours
  • II Professional Year: Veterinary Biochemistry (Paper I and II) – 2 +1 credit hours

Research

The Department is presently carrying out the following research activities:

  • Estrus induction through nano particles conjugated hormone in small ruminants
  • Adaptability of small ruminants to heat stress in Southern TamilNadu
  • Exploration of seminal characteristics in semen of native dog breeds
