DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY


The Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology was started in the year 2012 with an aim to make the UG and PG students as world class technocrats in the subject of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Objectives

Education:

To impart education in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology to Undergraduate / Post graduate and Doctoral degree students.

Research:

To carry out need based pharmacological / toxicological research on natural and synthetic drugs and their products. To carry out the research in drug delivery system

Extension:

To offer drug information services to farming and scientific community.


Education

The Department is currently offering the courses such as General Veterinary Pharmacology, Drugs Acting on Autonomic Nervous System, Drugs Acting on Central Nervous System, Drugs Acting on Different Body Systems, Veterinary Chemotherapy and Veterinary Toxicology in the subject of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology for UG and PG students. The Department is organizing the pharmaceutical meet regularly for the outgoing B.V.Sc. & A.H. students to get acquaintance with various trade preparations of pharmaceutical companies.

Research

The Department has a vision to promote and strengthen the research activities in the thrust areas such as Studies on drug resistance mechanisms in animals, Methodologies for detection of drug residues in livestock and poultry products, Evaluation of ethno-veterinary indigenous drugs to promote livestock health and productivity and Research on nano-drug delivery system. Currently, the Department is carrying out the research activities in the areas of nano-drug delivery, ethnoveterinary pharmacology and drug residues and antibiotic resistant pattern in animal products funded by ICAR and TANII.

Extension

The Department is involved in various extension programmes on livestock and poultry production as and when required on need basis. Ethnoveterinary practices for treating the diseases of livestock and poultry is also propagated among the farmers of South Tamil Nadu.

Infrastrcture

The Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology was started in the year 2012 with an aim to make the UG and PG students as world class technocrats in the subject of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology. The Department has Pharmacy, Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology & Chemotherapy Laboratory facilities. The CPCSEA approved Laboratory Animal House (Regn.No.2161/GO/Re/S/22/CPCSEA) facilities along with Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) are functioning at this Department to conduct in vivo and toxicological studies. The laboratories are equipped with instruments such as Isolated Tissue Bath, Kymograph, Electrical Recording Device with Digital Acquisition System, Electronic Stimulator, Stereotaxic Instrument, Monopan Electronic Balance, Binocular Microscopes, Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, pH meter, Hot air oven, Respiration pump, Microcentrifuge, Spirometer, Rota rod, Actophotometer, Tissue Homogenizer, Elevated Plus Maze, Analgesiometer-Eddy’s hot plate, Analgesiometer–Tail flick unit, Magnetic stirrer with probe, Vortex Mixer, Autoclave, Vertical laminar air flow, Microbiological incubator, Cook’s Pole climbing apparatus, Digital Vernier Caliper, Antibiotic zone reader with disc dispenser and Rotary Vacuum Evaporator.
