DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS TECHNOLOGY


The Department of Livestock Products Technology was initiated in the year 2012 to specifically deal with the production and processing technology of milk, meat, eggs and wool. At the time of inception, the department was mainly engaged in Under Graduate teaching programme formulated by VCI and post graduate programme was started during the year 2018-2019.



Objectives

Education:

To impart education in Livestock Products Technology for Undergraduate students.

Research:

To conduct research on need based field and industry oriented problems

Extension:

To conduct training programmes and demonstrations on value addition of livestock products to the farmers, entrepreneurs, rural youths and Self Help group women.

Education

As per VCI regulation, the Department is currently offering the courses such as Milk and milk Products Technology, Wool Science, Abattoir Practices and Animal Products Technology and Meat Science.

Research

  • Developed several technologies for ready to eat convenient, value added livestock products
  • Standardized the process for preparation of functional, fermented and traditional livestock products
  • Quality evaluation of livestock products

Facilities

The laboratories are equipped with instruments such as Overhead rail system Captive bolt stunner, Restraining unit, Slaughter hall accessories, Large animal weighing balance, Automatic scalder, Feather plucking machine, Flame photometer, Waring blender, Meat Slicer, Moisture balance, Digital microscope with LED TV and Desktop computer, Meat bone cutting band saw, Vacuum packaging machine, Homogenizer 100 LPH capacity, Double beam UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Meat mincer, Sausage maker, Bowl chopper.

Extension

The Department is involved in various extension programmes relevant on livestock products technology as and when required on need basis. Involved in conduction of various training programmes and demonstration of livestock products preparation including milk and meat products to the self-help groups along with technology transfer business ideas to the entrepreneurs.

Salient Achievements

  • Conducted State level online conference on “Value addition and Marketing of livestock and poultry produce” at VCRI, Tirunelveli on 22.10.2021.
  • Conducted World Food Day- 2021, Awareness programme on “Preparation of Value added Meat products “ in the Adapted village Kalakudi on 28.10.2021.
  • Conducted various programmes such as Quiz, Elocutions, Lectures for National Milk Day at VCRI, Tirunelveli from 22.11.2021 to 26.11.2021.
