DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL GENETICS AND BREEDING


The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding isfunctioning since the establishment of the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Theni in the year 2020. The department is offering Undergraduate courses to B.V. Sc& A.H students and engaged in research and extension activities in various fields of Animal Genetics and Breeding. The Department has well-equipped computer laboratory with internet facilities for teaching Biostatistics and Computer applications and an Undergraduate laboratory to teach Principles of Animal Genetics and Breeding.

Objectives

The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding was established in the year 2020 with the following objectives:

  • To impart education in Animal Genetics and Breeding at Undergraduate levels.
  • To undertake research on conservation of the indigenous animal genetic resources and breed improvement programs
  • To disseminate the scientific breeding technologies for the advancement of farming community
  • To cater to the needs of stakeholders through training and advisory services


Education

As per the MSVE 2016 regulations prescribed by VCI, the department is offering the Animal Genetics and Breeding – Paper I and II – Credit Hours: 3+1 to the II Professional Year – B.V. Sc& A.H. as below:

  • Unit – I: Biostatistics and Computer Application
  • Unit – II: Principles of Genetics and Population Genetics
  • Unit – III: Principles of Animal Breeding

Research -Thrust areas

Short-term goals

  • Survey, characterization, evaluation, conservation, and propagation of Malaimadu cattle, local breeds of sheep and goat and Kombai dog
  • Screening for genetic polymorphism in candidate genes and its association with economic and Sporting traits
  • Expression profile and Gene silencing/knock-out of myogenesis regulator genes in chicken

Long-term goals

  • Conservation of native animal genetic resources of Theni and adjoining districts.
  • Developing marker panel for disease resistance traits in livestock.
  • Applications of the artificial intelligence/ IoT in the animal breeding

Extension

  • Delivered the scientific breeding technologies in on/off campus programs, TV talks and radio talks for the benefit of farmers, students, and academicians.
  • Animalbreeding training will be offered in breeds identification, selection of animals, conservation, and breeding methods for the benefit of farmers.
  • Basic bio-informatics training courses for students and faculty
