DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY Parasitology


The Department of Veterinary Parasitology has been established on 05.06.2012 as a part of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu with the aim of providing quality education, research and extension service to the undergraduate students, field veterinarians and farmers. The department is functioning with three laboratories such as Helminthology laboratory cum museum, Entomology & Protozoology Laboratory and Research Laboratory. The department is also involved in diagnosis of parasitic diseases of animals by examination of clinical samples and identification of parasites collected from domestic & wild animals and human beings.


OBJECTIVES

  • Offering Undergraduate courses in Veterinary Parasitology
  • Undertaking research on parasitic diseases of livestock and poultry Inculcating Parasitology research in the minds of Undergraduate students
  • Creation of awareness on parasitic infections of animals to farmers through extension aids.
  • Providing training programme to field veterinarians and paraveterinarians regarding diagnosis of parasitic diseases

Undergraduate (B.V.SC & A.H.,)- Veterinary Parasitology (3 + 2)

  • Unit 1 : General Veterinary Parasitology
  • Unit 2 : Trematodes and Cestodes of Veterinary Importance
  • Unit 3 : Nematodes of Veterinary Importance
  • Unit 4 : Arthropods of Veterinary Importance
  • Unit 5 : Protozoa of Veterinary Importance
  • Veterinary Clinical Practices-II (Diagnostic Laboratory) (0+6)

Post-graduate - M.V.Sc. in Veterinary Parasitology degree course

Laboratory Facilities

  • The department is equipped with laboratory equipments and instruments needed for UG teaching as per VCI specification such as Autoclave, Hot air oven, Incubator, Centrifuge, Distillation unit, Water bath, Dissection microscopes, Compound microscopes and LCD Projector. Necessary Glass wares, Plastic wares, Chemicals and Reagents are available to handle UG and PG Practical classes.
  • The Helminthology laboratory is equipped with instruments for faecal examination and helminths identification. Permanent mounted microscopic slides, gross specimens, Helminth eggs/ova, Parasite charts and photographs of helminths are available for UG and PG education in this laboratory.
  • The Entomology and Protozoology laboratory is equipped with instruments for Blood smear and Skin scraping examination. Permanent mounted microscopic slides, gross specimens, Parasite charts and photographs of insects, arachnids and Protozoa are available for UG and PG education in this laboratory.
  • The Research lab is equipped with instruments to carry out basic and molecular research in Veterinary Parasitology.

RESEARCH

  • The department is actively involved in field oriented research on biology, treatment and control of parasites affecting animals
  • A Research Programme on ‘’Study on medicinal property of Pteridophytes in Ethnoveterinary medicine’’ is completed in collaboration with Dept. of Botany, AVVM Sri Pushpam College, Poondi of Bharathidasan University during 2015-2018
  • A research on acaricide detection using bioassay is also being carried out in the department during 2018
  • A total of 35 research articles have been published by the staff of this department in reputed scientific journals from 2015-2022
  • DST-SERB Early career research award entitled ‘Designing of novel and eco-friendly tick control devices for cattle’ has been sanctioned with a budget outlay of 34.97 lakhs during 2016-17.
  • The TANUVAS sub-project on “Prevalence of Schistosoma nasale and Schistosoma spindale in cattle in Cauvery Delta Region’ during 2021-22

Diagnostic Services

  • The department is routinely involved in examination of faeces, blood smears, skin scrapings, ecto and endo-parasites and other clinical samples received from VCC, LFC, Department of Veterinary Pathology, Animal Husbandry Department, Aavin and farmers.
  • A total of 904 parasitic samples were screened during the year 2020-21.

Significant findings

  • Duck lice Anatochus dentatus was recorded for the first time from Southern India
  • Anaticola sp. and Trinoton sp. of louse have been identified from ducks
  • Gongylonema ingluvicola has been identified from the crop of a pigeon
  • Prosthogonimus pellucidus was identified from the bursa of a desi bird
  • Eggs of Schistosoma spindale have been detected in faeces of cattle
  • Tetrameres spp. worms were identified from the proventriculus of native chicken

Extension

  • Trainings are being conducted to farmers with funding from ATMA and NABARD
  • Involving in disease investigation work along with other animal health departments
  • Creating awareness about parasitic diseases among farmers via radio/TV talks, pamphlets and popular articles in vernacular language.
