DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL NUTRITION


This Department started functioning in Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu in the year 2012 to offer undergraduate and post graduate education in Animal Nutrition.


OBJECTIVES

  • To impart undergraduate and postgraduate education to students.
  • To undertake research on the problems and future needs of the livestock and poultry industry.
  • To adopt advance feeding technologies to suit the farmer needs for economic livestock farming.

Education

This Department is offering undergraduate courses for the B.V.Sc& A.H students as per the VCI pattern. From the academic year 2019-20 onwards postgraduate courses are being offered for the M.V.Sc., students.

Laboratory facilities

Animal Nutrition laboratory is equipped with all the equipment as per VCI norms such as Kjeldahl apparatus, Soxhlet apparatus, muffle furnace, hot air oven, UV- spectrophotometer and flame photometer for under graduate education.

Advanced equipments available

  • Gas chromatograph with Mass spectrometer (GCMS)
  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS)
  • Near infrared spectrometer (NIRS) are available in the Department.

Animal Feed Quality Control Laboratory

Animal Nutrition laboratory is equipped with all the equipment as per VCI norms such as Kjeldahl apparatus, Soxhlet apparatus, muffle furnace, hot air oven, UV- spectrophotometer and flame photometer for under graduate education.

Feed processing and Mineral mixture production units

A feed processing and demonstration unit was established under NADP scheme on "Establishing regional feed processing and demonstration unit" with a budget of Rs. 184 lakhs. Low cost concentrate mixture for various livestock species was prepared in the form of mash, pellet and crumbles. It is also used as a demonstration unit for students, farmers and entrepreneurs. In addition, TANUVAS funded self-financing scheme on "Establishment of feed mixing unit" is functioning since April, 2014 with a budget of Rs. 4.00 lakhs. Concentrate mixture for various species are being prepared and supplied to the livestock maintained at different sections of VCRI, Orathanadu, Government farms and also farmers in and around the Cauvery delta region. A complete feed block unit was also established to produce nutritionally enriched complete feed blocks using paddy straw, sorghum stover, maize stover and other agricultural by-products. TANUVAS funded self-financing scheme on "TANUVAS SMART Mineral mixture production centre at Department of Animal Nutrition, VCRI, Orathanadu" is functioning in this Department since June, 2015 with a budget of Rs. 3.00 lakhs.

Extension

Scientific knowledge on feeding management of various livestock species, preparation of low cost concentrate mixture & mineral mixture and conservation of green fodders as silage are transferred to the farmers through popular articles, pamphlets, delivering radio talks & guest lectures, participating exhibitions & mass contact programmes. Consultancy services are also offered to the farmers.
