DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY


The department was started on 14.06.1985 with the scheme ‘Unit XIII-Veterinary Education and Research - Veterinary Plan - Institute of Higher Studies and Innovations, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal’. The department is offering both Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Research guidance which is a continuing process every year.

Objectives

Main objectives

  • Imparting education in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology to under-graduate and post-graduate students.
  • Conducting pharmaceutical meet for outgoing B.V.Sc &A.H., students.
  • Offering drug information services to the needy doctors and farmers.
  • Advising students working in drug and ethnoveterinary related research.

Research objectives

  • Documentation and Identification of phytomoleculesfor the treatment of viral and bacterial diseases of livestock and poultry.
  • Maintenance of herbal garden for the development of ethnopharmacology wing.
  • Collaborating with pharmaceutical companies for validation of their products.

Education

As per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016), a course or B.V.Sc Degree Progromme and Post Graduate Degree Perogramme.

The Department offers a course on "Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology" for the students undergoing B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme, as per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016). The Department, also, offers M.V.Sc., and Ph.D., degree programmes in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, as per ICAR common sylabi.

  • Maintenance of Instructional herbal garden for education and research purposes.
  • Screening of plant extracts for their pharmacological properties.
  • Establishing zebra-fish models for assessing developmental toxicity of chemicals and evaluating beneficial effects of plant extracts on toxicities in animal models.
  • Interaction kinetics of drugs used in livestock and poultry.
  • Offering Drug information and Toxicological services to Veterinarians and farmers.
