The Department of Animal Nutrition was started in 1985, to offer undergraduate courses in Animal Nutrition. Later, Post graduate courses were offered from the year 1994, In the year 2007, a separate feed manufacturing unit, funded by ICAR, New Delhi under Experiential Learning Programme, was started to cater the needs of livestock and poultry feeds of the college, university centres and state government farms. Similarly, TANUVAS SMART production centre was started the year 2015.
The Department offers Animal Nutrition course for the students undergoing B.V.Sc & A.H. degree programme, as per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016). The Department, also, offers M.V.Sc., and Ph.D., degree programmes in Animal Nutrition.
An Automated Environment Controlled Chamber Facility for Commercial Broilers and Layers has been established at a cost of Rs.50.0 lakhs under ICAR – NICRA (National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture) Project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. This facility comprises of six chambers (40‘x 9.5‘) with total plinth area of 2700 sq. feet to carryout simulation studies pertaining to impact of heat/cold stress on the performance of chicken.

Livestock and poultry feeds are supplied to needy units of TANUVAS such as Livestock Farm Complexes of VC&RI, Namakkal, Salem, Theni & Udumalpet, RREC-Pudukkottai, KVKs of TANUVAS (Namakkal, Kallakurichi, Tirupur, etc), TNAU & NGOs, University Research Farms (MSRS, Pottaneri, SBRS, Ooty), District Livestock Farms (Pudukkottai and Chettinadu) of Department of Animal Husbandry, Sheep farm, Salem, sheep farm, Ranipet, BPRDC, Karur, AIIRLIVAS, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, farmers and retail sales through sales counter.
Mineral mixture supplied to needy units such as KVKs of TANUVAS, VUTRCs, farmers and retail sales through sales counter. The sale price of TANUVAS Mineral mixture is Rs.80/-per kg
