Department of Animal Nutrition


Started in 1985, to offer undergraduate courses in Animal Nutrition. Post graduate courses were offered from the year 1994. In the year 1994, an independent unit for analysis of feed and feed ingredients was started in the name of “Animal feed analytical and quality assurance laboratory” to cater the need of the poultry farmers. In the year 2007, a separate feed manufacturing unit was started to cater to the needs of livestock and poultry feed of the college, university centres and state government farms.

Objectives

  • Imparting education to undergraduate and postgraduate students and under taking research and extension.
  • To improve nutrient utilization of alternative energy and protein sources.
  • Evaluation of feed additives.

Education

The Department offers a course on "Animal Nutrition" for the students undergoing B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme, as per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016). The Department, also, offers M.V.Sc., and Ph.D., degree programmes in Animal Nutrition.

Other Courses:

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Feed Manufacturing Technology through distance education mode.
  • Skill development course on Feed Mill Operator.

Infrastructure

I. Feed manufacturing unit with following facilities

  • Feed godown cum milling unit
  • Feed supplement preparation room and
  • Room for preparation of value added feeds.

II. Feed manufacturing unit with following facilities

  • One deep litter poultry shed
  • Automated Environment Controlled Chamber Facility for Commercial Broilers and Layers

An "Automated Environment Controlled Chamber Facility for Commercial Broilers and Layers' has been established at a cost of Rs.50.0 lakhs under ICAR - NICRA (National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture) Project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. This facility comprises of six chambers (40 'X 9.5') with total plinth area of 2700 sq. feet to carryout simulation studies pertaining to impact of heat / cold stress on the performance of chicken. The efficacy of various heat stress ameliorative measures is being evaluated using this unique facility which is first of its kind in the country.

Achievements

1.49 M.V.Sc students and 8 Ph.D students completed their degree programmes

2.Established environmental controlled poultry house in this 1000 layer and 1600 broiler chicken can be grown.

3.Eleven institute –industry projects and 5 government funded projects have been completed

4.ICAR- funded Experiential Programme -Hand on training on Feed Manufacturing Technology given to 691 students.
