Department of Veterinary Medicine


The Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine was started in the year 1985 to teach Veterinary Clinical Medicine to the Under-Graduate students of BVSc degree programme Later, the Department was upgraded to Post-Graduate Department, and offers M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. in Veterinary Clinical Medicine from the year 2006 and 2008, respectively.


The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine was established during 1985 by offering undergraduate courses. The Postgraduate programme was started in the Department during the year 1993. In addition to the education, this department undertaking various research projects and extension activities to uplift the farming communities.


Both Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine and Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine have been merged and renamed as Department of Veterinary Medicine from 01.01.2026.




Objectives

  • To impart UG and PG education
  • Treatment, prevention and control of infectious and non-infectious diseases of livestock and poultry using special diagnostic aids at Medicine units of VCC
  • Disease investigation during outbreak of diseases of livestock and poultry
  • Dissemination of scientific information on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of livestock, pet animals and poultry
  • Farm advisory service on improving health, production and prevention of diseases
  • Continuous Veterinary Education programs for the field practicing veterinarians on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of livestock and poultry

Education

Currently, the Department offers a course on "Veterinary Medicine" for the students undergoing B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme, as per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016). The Department, also, offers M.V.Sc., and Ph.D., degree programme in Veterinary Medicine.

  • Postgraduate laboratory is equipped with gradient thermal cycler, Gel documentation system, Ultra low deep freezer (-86°C), deep freezer (-20°C), vertical Laminar flow, cooling centrifuge, dark field microscope, FAT microscope, inverted microscope and bacteriological incubator for strengthening research facilities
  • A separate "Leptospirosis laboratory" is available for screening of human and animal sera samples by Dark Field Microscopy (DFM) on cost basis

Disease Investigation Service

  • During the phase of epidemics and sporadic - epidemiological investigations are being carried out to indentify the cause and creation of disease database
  • Periodic screening of farm animals for infectious and contagious diseases
  • Disease investigation service on government farms, field outbreaks, captive and wild animals
  • Diagnostic services for major diseases of livestock, poultry, companion, captive and wild animals

Extension Activities

  • Being part of Animal health camps organized by associated departments and NSS.
  • On and off campus training programme for progressive farmers and field Veterinarians to update the knowledge on prevention and treatment of diseases
  • Awareness campaigns for public on rumen disorders, production diseases, rabies, leptospirosis, tuberculosis, brucellosis and zoonotic parasitic infestations through distribution of pamphlets and publication in newspapers
  • Developed and advocated a new technique on “Treatment of mastitis without using antibiotics’ to Veterinary Assistant Surgeons of Government of Tamil Nadu for the benefit of dairy farmers and to avoid indiscriminate use of antibiotics
  • Awareness on chronic kidney diseases, ruminal lactic acidosis, foreign body syndrome, immunization and deworming for pet animals has been created among owners visited to VCC

  • Seroprevalence of bovine viral diarrhoea in North-western zone of Tamil Nadu was identified as 13.2 % by indirect ELISA in cattle and BVD-1 virus was identified and sequenced

  • Developed epidemiological map for gastrointestinal parasitism in small ruminants of Namakkal, Trichy and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu
