LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS TECHNOLOGY (DAIRY SCIENCE)

Genesis

Department of Livestock Products Technology - Dairy Science is a constituent unit of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal since its inception in 1985. The department offers under graduate, Post graduate diploma in Dairy Processing and Quality Assurance, Post-graduate, and doctoral courses in Livestock Products Technology. The department also develops student entrepreneurs through the Experiential Learning programme on “Processing of Milk and Preparation of Value Added Dairy Products” funded by ICAR.The department has a self-financing scheme on "Processing and sale of dairy products" under a variety of milk products like Shrikhand, peda, paneer, ice cream, gulabjamun, flavoured milk, buttermilk, whey drink and Panchagavya are being prepared and marketed. All along its existence, the department has been sparkling with activity in all aspects of academic pursuits, viz., research, teaching and extension.

Objectives

To undertake teaching in the field of dairy science
To conduct research on need based field and industry oriented problems
To disseminate research findings to the dairy farmers, entrepreneurs and women self-help groups by conducting training programmes

Education

As per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016), the course pertinent to Livestock Products Technology (Dairy Science) for the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme is being offered at this Department.
Post graduate diploma: Post graduate diploma course in Dairy Processing and quality assurance is offered.

Achievements

Technology transferred: Instant Gulabjamun mix production technology was transferred to Aavin
Patent applied: 1. Combined cream separator cum butter
Patent Filed and Published for Channa cookies
Established a “Model demonstration unit for processing of milk and preparation of value added dairy products” funded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research with the total cost of rupees 99 lakhs.
Established a “Value added dairy food manufacturing unit to maximize the returns from dairy farming” Funded by National Agricultural Development Programme with the budget of rupees 1.17 crores.
Trained 516 staff from aavin on quality management in dairy industry.
Trained 3000 entrepreneurs on Value addition of milk.
