MADRAS VETERINARY COLLEGE

DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL NUTRITION

Genesis

Department of Animal Nutrition is one of the oldest Department in Madras Veterinary College. It was recognized as a separate unit during the year 1950 and recognized as regional centre for postgraduate education as early as in the year of 1958. In the year 1960, it was recognized for carrying out Ph.D. programmes. So far around 72 post graduate theses and 43 Ph.D. theses have been generated in this department. The department possesses good infrastructure facilities since early 1980's to conduct advance research in animal nutrition.

Objectives

  • To offer quality education in Animal Nutrition using modern education technology to equip veterinary graduates to meet challenges in field
  • To develop the methane mitigation strategies for indigenous dairy cattle
  • To develop novel bio-available nutrient supplements and precision feeding system for livestock and poultry
  • To offer feed analytical services to various stake holders
  • Production and supply of TANUVAS SMART Mineral Mixture

Education

The department offers various undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral courses in the field of Animal Nutrition.

Salient research achievements

  • Development of TANUVAS-RUSITEC (Rumen simulation Techniques) for conducting In vitro evaluation of feedstuffs.
  • Formulation and production of Area specific TANUVAS-SMART mineral mixture to improve productivity and reduce the cost in dairy cattle.
  • Inclusion of neem leaves at 50% in total mixed ration did not affect the semen quality and quantity as well as hematological or biochemical profile in goats.
  • TANUVAS-GRAND (Gruel Rooted Additive Nutrient Drops) was prepared for preventing Acidosis and improve milk production in ruminants by 10%
  • Feeding sheanut cake at 8% level in total mixed ration reduced methane production through in vitro (25.04%) and in vivo (10.26%)
  • Incorporation of combination of sea weeds (Gracilaria verrucosa and Sargassum wightii) at 1% level in the basal diet evolved as a feeding strategy, reduced the methane emission level by 73.09% in vitro and 9.56% in vivo without affecting digestibility in paddy straw based ration in dairy cattle.
  • Dietary supplementation of pomegranate peel (15g/kg) and lactobacillus (109/kg) improved the shelf life of broiler chicken meat
  • Optimum dietary energy and protein levels for 0-12 weeks of age in Siruvidai chicks were 2500 Kcal ME/kg and 18% CP. Whereas during 13 -20 weeks of age dietary energy level of 2300 Kcal ME/kg with 14% CP was found to be optimum.
  • Tulsi leaf powder at 0.5% level can be safely incorporated in Japanese quail diets without affecting productive performance.

Extension

  • Production and Supply of TANUVAS-SMART mineral mixture on cost basis
  • Providing Animal Feed Quality Assessment services to the farmers and entrepreneurs
  • Supply of inputs like livestock feed, seeds, mineral mixture to SCSP and TSP farmers in ICAR-NIANP methane scheme

Thrust Areas

  • Ruminant nutrition (Methane mitigation through unconventional feeds and feed additives)
